Harry and Meghan's UK return 'could damage monarchy'

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are returning to the UK permanently at the end of August, a move that a royal expert has warned could cause "enormous damage to the monarchy if things go wrong".

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, will leave their Montecito home to make the UK their main residence. They have found a non-royal residence outside London, and the children have been enrolled at schools, though the locations remain undisclosed for security reasons.

Royal expert warns of 'enormous damage'

Speaking exclusively to the Express following the announcement, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said the return could be damaging. "This is sensational. It shows they were failures in the US," he said.

"I don't know who knew what, but it could cause enormous damage to the monarchy if things go wrong. Obviously reconciliation is always desirable but what will they do?"

Fitzwilliams added: "They face a hostile press and public. What about William? This was obviously timed with news of Charles Spencer's memoir. The public gaze will never leave them so this is their ultimate challenge. Can they be trusted?"

King Charles informed of the move

According to The Telegraph, King Charles was informed of the news on Sunday, with the Prince and Princess of Wales also being told about the move.

Harry and Meghan, who quit royal duties and moved to the US in 2020, are not expected to return to life as working royals at this time. While they will keep their Montecito home, they plan to have their new UK residence as their main home moving forward.
