Environmental campaigners staged a renewable energy demonstration at Donald Trump's golf resort in Scotland on Monday, installing six small replica wind turbines on a green to protest his stance on fossil fuels.
Greenpeace confirmed that three activists set up the mock turbines on the fourth hole green at Trump Turnberry Golf Club in South Ayrshire at approximately 6.30am. The demonstrators later removed them as golfers approached, ensuring their round was not disrupted.
The activists said their action was a direct response to Mr Trump's known aversion to wind power and his vocal support for oil and gas. The protest follows a recent post by the US president on his Truth Social page, advocating for increased oil and gas extraction in the North Sea, where he wrote: “U.K., which is better situated on the North Sea for purposes of energy than Norway, should, DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! AND, NO MORE WINDMILLS!”
Greenpeace says 65 per cent of Scots do not support Mr Trump’s call for more oil and gas, instead backing renewable energy. Lily-Rose Ellis, Greenpeace climate campaigner, said: “Donald Trump wants to keep us as lifetime members of his Gulf Club, where every time he starts an illegal war, bills go through the roof while his fossil fuel backers make billions.”
She added: “Wind and solar farms built since the start of the Ukraine war have saved us seven million pounds every day since Trump attacked Iran and drove gas prices back up again. More clean energy that doesn’t rely on the Strait of Hormuz or Russian pipelines can save us money, boost our security and tackle climate change. It’s a hole in one.”
Mr Trump has long voiced his dislike of wind turbines, particularly offshore wind, having launched a battle with the Scottish Government to stop a development visible from his Aberdeenshire golf course.
