Gary Lineker has slammed FIFA for issuing what he describes as a 'nonsense' and 'absurd' sanction to Qatar player Assim Madibo. The Qatari received a five-match suspension at the World Cup following his challenge on Canada's Ismael Kone.
Brutal Tackle and Immediate Aftermath
Madibo clattered into the Canadian from behind, with the impact of his tackle causing Kone to sustain a horrific broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. The Sassuolo defender was taken for immediate surgery following the match, which Canada dominated 6-0. The Qatar defender saw red several minutes after the incident.
FIFA's Harsh Penalty
As a result, FIFA extended his suspension to five matches, marking it as amongst the harshest penalties the organisation has imposed on a player. A FIFA statement confirmed the ban was issued 'for a breach of article 14.1.e (serious foul play) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.' It ranks among the most substantial retrospective sanctions FIFA has delivered for on-pitch conduct. A comparable case was the nine-match ban and four-month prohibition from all football-related activities given to Luis Suarez after he bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup.
Lineker's Social Media Outburst
Following Madibo's punishment, Lineker turned to social media to express his astonishment at the decision. In an Instagram story, he stated: 'This is a complete nonsense. It was clearly an accidental challenge which should not have even been a red card. He was also heartbroken by the injury to his opponent. Absurd decision.'
Kone's Recovery and Support
Kone received a hero's welcome when he appeared before the passionate Canadian supporters in Vancouver prior to Canada's final Group B fixture against Switzerland. Before his public appearance, the Canadian Soccer Team's social media account confirmed Kone's operation on his broken leg had been successful. They wrote: 'Last night, Ismael Kone underwent successful surgery to repair a lower limb fracture. He is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026.' His club, Sassuolo, also shared an update of their own, writing: 'The operation to repair the fracture in his left leg was a complete success. The player will begin his rehabilitation programme in the coming days. The whole club sends Ismael their best wishes for a speedy recovery.' Kone will watch from home when Canada face South Africa in their maiden World Cup knockout stages encounter.
