Politicians have welcomed the decision to save the ice rink at Coatbridge's The Time Capsule from replacement plans. North Lanarkshire Council confirmed it will not proceed with proposals to transform the facility into an active play area with padel courts and personal fitness zones after a public outcry.
Public Pressure Leads to U-Turn
An online petition gathered nearly 15,000 signatures, and a council consultation found that 78 per cent of respondents wanted the ice rink retained. Council leader Jim Logue said the administration will respect these views and not proceed with closure recommendations.
Coatbridge MSP Fulton MacGregor conducted a constituency survey and praised the community's strength of feeling. He stated: "I welcome North Lanarkshire Council’s decision not to proceed with the proposals and, importantly, I welcome the strength of feeling shown by the local community throughout this process."
Call for Future Investment
MacGregor emphasised that retention alone is insufficient: "There is now a clear opportunity to look forward, not just to protect the facility, but to consider how investment can maximise its long-term potential for sport, inclusion and community use." He noted consistent messages from local groups, users and campaigners calling for strengthened facilities for future generations.
Uddingston and Bellshill MP Steven Bonnar added: "I am glad North Lanarkshire Labour have finally come to their senses and backed away from plans to close The Time Capsule ice rink. This U-turn did not happen by accident. It happened because local people spoke out loudly and clearly."
Challenges Remain
Despite the decision, Council leader Jim Logue highlighted challenges. Public usage at The Time Capsule decreased by 16 per cent over two years, and 57 per cent of those interviewed stated they currently do not and would not use the ice rink. He noted the operational deficit and financial reality facing the council.
Logue said: "Faced with the current financial reality facing North Lanarkshire Council and the current operational deficit accrued from providing the Ice Rink facility, I believe the time is now right for the council to meet with all parties interested in future ice skating and ice hockey provision." He plans to meet club representatives and senior council officers to discuss sustainable options.
Community Victory
Bonnar stressed the rink's broader value: "The Time Capsule is far more than just an ice rink. It provides opportunities for sport, inclusion and community participation for people of all ages and abilities, including those with additional support needs." While welcoming the U-turn, he called for a clear guarantee that closure plans are off the table for good.
