Ryan Murphy's latest project, The Shards, an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's 2021 novel, is already being hailed as a masterpiece following the release of its debut trailer on July 14. The dark thriller, set in 1980s Los Angeles, follows a group of privileged teenagers at an exclusive prep school whose lives are disrupted by a serial killer known as The Trawler.
Plot and Cast Details
At the center of the story is Bret (played by Igby Rigney), an aspiring writer who becomes suspicious of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). The arrival of Robert coincides with the Trawler's reign of terror, preying on teenagers and casting a sinister shadow over the group's seemingly gilded lives. The official synopsis describes the series as exploring "the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence."
Bret's elite social circle includes Susan Reynolds (Kaia Gerber), Debbie Schaffer (Hayes Warner), and Thom Wright (Graham Campbell), described as "a glamorous and deeply entangled group drawn into a life of wealth, beauty, parties and excess." The adult world offers a stark contrast, with characters like Terry Schaffer (Wes Bentley), Liz Schaffer (Evan Rachel Wood), and Steven Reinhardt (Jordan Roth) representing "the dark and cynical world" beyond the teenagers' bubble.
Fan and Critic Reactions
The trailer sparked immediate excitement among Ryan Murphy's fanbase. One viewer declared, "Ryan Murphy plus this cast is a guaranteed masterpiece," while another added, "Ryan Murphy never misses when it comes to eerie vibes. This looks incredible." A third fan gushed, "Everything Ryan Murphy touches turns into gold." However, not all reactions were positive. Some critics expressed fatigue with Murphy's prolific output, with one writing, "Begging this guy to stop making shows." Another offered a more nuanced critique: "I think Ryan has a LOT of ideas and most of them are actually really good. Unfortunately he never knows how to finish them or at least proceed it, imo."
Release Schedule
The first two episodes of The Shards will premiere simultaneously on Disney+ on August 6, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly. The series arrives amid a mixed reception for Murphy's recent projects, leading some viewers to approach it with caution. Ellis, who wrote the novel and serves as executive producer, is best known for American Psycho (1991), one of his most celebrated works.
