Magician Chris Cross to Perform Upside-Down Escape Stunt in Newcastle
Magician Chris Cross to Perform Upside-Down Escape Stunt

Magician Chris Cross, known as 'The Great Magician of the North', will perform a daring escapology stunt this weekend at Newcastle Castle Keep. Suspended upside-down by his ankles 80 feet above the ground and confined in a straitjacket, he will attempt to free himself in what he calls 'Houdini meets Batman'. The stunt is scheduled for 3pm on Sunday, July 19, 2026, and is free for the public to watch.

Stunt Honors Houdini Centenary

The event is part of a day of activities organized by UKEA (UK Escape Artists) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini's death. Houdini himself visited Newcastle in 1920 and performed at the Keep. Chris Cross aims to pay tribute to the legendary escapologist, saying, 'This will be a great tribute to the great Harry Houdini in the centenary year of his death.'

Ten-Year Anniversary and Personal Challenge

This marks the 10-year anniversary of Chris Cross's previous escape at the same location, where he freed himself in one minute and 30 seconds. Now 37, he aims to beat that time by 10 seconds. 'I'm 10 years older than last time I attempted this and now I'm trying to do it 10 seconds faster. The maths doesn't add up, so I really do hope I can beat my own set record,' he said. He added that practice is difficult: 'I'm just going to go straight in and do it and have faith in my own abilities.'

Safety Concerns and Risks

Chris Cross acknowledged the risks involved, including wind conditions, potential blackouts from blood rushing to his head, or a fall if rigging fails. 'People have said I must be crazy and they're asking if it's safe. The answer is yes to a little crazy but, as far as safety goes, things can go wrong – anything could go wrong,' he stated. He emphasized that all safety checks will be carried out before the stunt. The Lord Mayor of Newcastle will time the escape, and local singer-songwriter Liam Fender, brother of Sam Fender, has provided a special music track for the occasion.

Background of the Magician

Chris Cross, from Fenham, Newcastle, became a full-time magician at age 16. His career includes appearances on BBC1's The One Show, CBBC's The Slammer, a guest slot on a David Blaine tour, and performances for royalty and celebrities. He now lives in High Spen, Gateshead. The stunt is open to all, with multiple viewing points around the city. 'All you have to do is look to the roof of the castle at 3pm and you'll see me!' he said.
