Netflix's East of Eden: Florence Pugh Stars in 'Genius' Period Drama
Florence Pugh Stars in Netflix's East of Eden Period Drama

Netflix has confirmed the release date and shared a fresh look at Florence Pugh in character for its upcoming period drama, East of Eden. The seven-part series, based on John Steinbeck's 1952 novel, is set to stream from October 1.

Florence Pugh Takes on the Role of Cathy Ames

Florence Pugh, known for her roles in Midsommar and Thunderbolts, will play Cathy Ames, described as an antihero. The series is adapted by Zoe Kazan, who has a personal connection to the book: a previous film adaptation was directed by her grandfather, double Oscar winner Elias Kazan, though his version focused on only part of the story. Kazan's new series aims to be a more faithful adaptation, centering on the character of Cathy Ames.

Writer Calls Pugh a 'Genius'

Kazan praised Pugh's performance, telling Netflix's Tudum website: “Her awareness of the camera is unparalleled I don’t use this word lightly: I think she’s a genius. I watched her on set for five months. I have no more insight now as to how she works than I did before. I can see how hard she works, and I can see how much it means to her, but there's no obvious preparation or process that is visible to me at least.”

East of Eden is streaming on Netflix from October 1.
