Lal Qila, a popular Indian restaurant in Cramlington, Northumberland, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week and is also hoping to see England beat Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, as it is a favourite dining spot for England defender Dan Burn.
Dan Burn's World Cup Journey
Dan Burn, a Newcastle United player and Blyth native, has made two substitute appearances for Thomas Tuchel's England side so far. He earned praise for a goal-line clearance in England's 3-2 win over Mexico and for his defensive work against Erling Haaland in the quarter-final victory over Norway. The semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday will be a tense match, with fan zones in Newcastle expected to be packed.
Lal Qila's 40-Year Legacy
Lal Qila opened in 1986 on Dudley Lane and quickly gained a reputation for outstanding food, warm hospitality, and exceptional service. It has been recognised by local and national publications and won Best Eatery in Northumberland at England's Business Awards. The restaurant also made the top 100 curry restaurants in the UK for 2026. Co-owner Suroth Miah attributes its longevity to consistent quality: 'It's the food, the service and the fact we put a lot of effort in - you have to do that.' He also credited local support, especially during the Covid pandemic.
The restaurant's most popular dish over the years has been chicken tikka masala, while fish dishes have gained popularity recently. Lal Qila concluded its four-day 40th birthday celebrations on Monday.
Support for Dan Burn
Miah confirmed that Dan Burn has dined at Lal Qila several times. 'We're right behind him for Wednesday. He's done really well so far and hopefully he'll get a full game!' he said. The restaurant staff will be watching the match, hoping for an England victory that would secure a place in the World Cup final.
