Netflix's new documentary 'Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea' has become the platform's most-watched title among UK subscribers, revealing previously unseen footage and the full story of the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster that claimed 32 lives.
The Victims: How They Died
Out of more than 4,000 people on board, 32 passengers and crew members lost their lives the night of the incident. Details of their deaths emerged during Captain Francesco Schettino's trial, as reported by The Guardian.
One French passenger, Francis Servel, gave his life vest to his wife because she could not swim. Unable to find a place on a lifeboat, he either fell or threw himself into the sea but was sucked underwater by a whirlpool and died of asphyxiation.
Italian passenger Maria Grazia Trecarichi, wearing a life vest, did not reach a lifeboat. While waiting to be rescued, she slid off the ship due to its extreme tilt and is presumed to have drowned.
A waiter drowned after remaining on the ship to assist with lowering remaining lifeboats and fell into the water. Some passengers drowned while still aboard as water rose violently inside, forcing them to walk through tilting corridors to reach other lifeboats.
The Aftermath and Trial
The final body was not recovered until November 2014, more than two years after the incident. Captain Francesco Schettino was convicted of manslaughter and abandoning ship. In February 2015, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison: ten years for manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck, and one year for abandoning passengers, to be served consecutively.
The documentary includes interviews with survivors, staff, and holidaymakers, showing the chaos after the ship hit a rock, took on water, and began to tilt. The order to abandon ship was given more than an hour after the collision.

According to its synopsis, the film features previously unseen footage from the tragic night and has been described by viewers as 'absolutely heartbreaking.' It explains how the night unfolded and the aftermath, providing a comprehensive account of the disaster.
