Bargain Hunt's Roo Irvine: Family Tragedy Behind BBC Star's Career and Real Name
Bargain Hunt's Roo Irvine: Family Tragedy and Real Name Revealed

Roo Irvine, one of the BBC's most recognisable antiques experts, has revealed how a devastating family tragedy reshaped her life and led to her television career. The Scottish presenter, known for her lively personality on Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, was born Arusha Irvine but goes by the nickname "Roo."

Before becoming a BBC staple, Irvine held a senior marketing position alongside her husband, Mark. Their lives changed dramatically in 2013 when her father died unexpectedly, followed just three weeks later by Mark's father after a long battle with cancer.

From Marketing to Antiques

Irvine and her husband walked away from their corporate careers to support their widowed mothers. In her own words, the antiques business was born from misfortune. On her website, she wrote: "Kilcreggan Antiques came about quite by (bad) luck when suddenly, and unexpectedly, in 2013, my wonderful Dad passed away. I was heartbroken and devastated."

She continued: "Then, just three weeks later, my husband Mark also lost his father to a long battle with cancer. We walked away from our senior corporate jobs and focused on taking care of our widowed mothers."

Recalling the turning point, she explained: "I'd always loved antiques and had developed a keen eye, so my husband suggested we 'go for it' and Kilcreggan Antiques was born. Out of some of my darkest days came a sliver of light. Fate?"

Private Life and Marriage

Irvine married Mark in 2012. Mark is an Independent councillor for Argyll and Bute and chairs the Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee. The couple maintain privacy but occasionally share glimpses on social media. On their ninth anniversary in 2021, Irvine posted: "Happy Anniversary to my rock, my strength & my mashed potato! ... Here's to 9 years as Mrs Irvine. Here's to our precious square."

Career Transformation

Irvine now runs Kilcreggan Antiques from Argyll and Bute, which became the springboard for her television career. Reflecting on her journey, she said: "I think the world of antiques found me, if anything. My husband and I both had our own marketing consultancy, and we were used to travelling a lot for work, but then both of our fathers passed away within three weeks of each other back in 2013."

What began as a new chapter emerging from grief has transformed into a prosperous career in antiques and broadcasting, establishing Irvine as one of the BBC's most cherished specialists.
