Comedian Amy Schumer has publicly addressed speculation surrounding her decision to wipe her Instagram profile clean of older photographs, firmly denying suggestions it was linked to her recent significant weight loss.
Clearing the Air on Instagram Motives
On Tuesday, the 44-year-old star deleted all previous content from her Instagram account, posting a new series of images showcasing her slimmer figure in a striking red mini dress. In the caption, she initially stated the deletion was for 'no reason'.
However, after commentators suggested she removed the photos because they depicted her before her body transformation, Schumer returned to the platform on Wednesday to refute this narrative directly. 'I didn't delete my old photos because they were pre me losing weight,' she wrote emphatically.
A Transformation Driven by Health
Schumer explained that her weight loss, reported to be at least 40lb over recent months, was motivated primarily by health concerns, not cosmetic goals. She has been using the weight loss medication Mounjaro, a GLP-1 drug often prescribed for type 2 diabetes.
'I'm proud of how I've looked always,' Schumer asserted. She detailed her health journey, stating, 'I have been working to be pain free and I finally am. My endometriosis is better. My back is healing. I no longer have Cushing syndrome so my face went back to normal.'
She emphasised her focus on wellbeing, particularly for her five-year-old son, Gene, adding, 'I am grateful to be strong and healthy especially for my son.'
Instagram as a Curation, Not an Identity
Schumer offered a perspective on social media, distinguishing it from personal identity. 'Your Instagram is not your identity it’s a curation of what you want the world to see,' she wrote, noting that she currently feels 'great strong and beautiful' and enjoys sharing that.
She clarified that her journey was not a deliberate 'weight loss journey' but a focus on health, acknowledging that her weight may always fluctuate. As a perimenopausal woman on HRT medication, she is also using oestrogen and progesterone, which she says have made her perimenopause symptoms disappear.
Schumer concluded her message with a note of solidarity: 'Wishing you strength and self love on whatever path you’re on as long as it’s kind and respectful to all people. No matter their weight race or religion peace!'
The star has been transparent about her experiences with various weight management methods. She previously tried Ozempic but found it made her ill, and has also undergone liposuction. Her positive experience with Midi Health, the telehealth service that prescribed her Mounjaro and HRT, led her to invest in the company.
