The latest series of BBC's hit reality competition, The Traitors, has returned with a controversial new twist that has left players livid. Host Claudia Winkleman revealed that this year, she has selected a Secret Traitor, a move that shakes up the game for participants vying for a cash prize and changes the viewing experience for audiences at home.
For the first time, four Traitors were chosen during the opening episode. After interviewing all contestants, Claudia tapped each Traitor on the shoulder while they were blindfolded around the Round Table. However, viewers were not shown who the Secret Traitor is, adding an element of mystery.
The Secret Traitor knows the identities of the other three Traitors—Hugo, Rachel, and Stephen—but the others do not know who the Secret Traitor is. Each night, the Secret Traitor provides a shortlist of potential murder victims, from which the other Traitors must choose one. The Secret Traitor cannot include themselves on the list, protecting their identity.
This twist has frustrated the regular Traitors, who are unaware of the Secret Traitor's identity. The Secret Traitor wears a red cloak instead of the usual green, but even after one episode, the list of suspects is narrowing. The first potential victims—James, Netty, and Maz—cannot be the Secret Traitor, leaving 16 suspects.
Claudia hinted that the Traitors will not be able to unmask the Secret Traitor until they win back their power, though details remain unclear. The Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
