BBC's The Other Bennet Sister Adaptation Shifts Focus to Mary Bennet

Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice has long centered on the spirited Elizabeth Bennet, but a new BBC adaptation is turning the spotlight onto her overlooked sister. The Other Bennet Sister, based on Janice Hadlow's bestselling novel, premieres tonight, Sunday, March 15, at 8pm on BBC One, offering a fresh perspective on the beloved story.

A New Take on a Classic Tale

This ten-part period drama delves into the life of Mary Bennet, the "seemingly unremarkable" middle sister who struggles to emerge from the shadows of her more celebrated siblings. The narrative follows Mary's journey from the lavish social gatherings of London to the breathtaking landscapes of the Lake District, as she seeks self-discovery, independence, and personal reinvention.

Meet the Star-Studded Cast

At the heart of the series is Ella Bruccoleri, who portrays Mary Bennet. Bruccoleri is best known to audiences for her role as Sister Frances in Call the Midwife, a part she played for four years. Since then, she has appeared in Extraordinary, Hotel Portofino, The Chelsea Detective, Down Cemetery Road, and Bridgerton season three as Miss Barragan.

The Bennet family matriarch, Mrs. Bennet, is brought to life by Ruth Jones, celebrated for co-creating and starring in the BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey as Nessa Jenkins. Jones has also headlined her own series, Stella, and recently featured in Netflix's Run Away by Harlan Coben.

Playing the witty and sarcastic Mr. Bennet is Richard E. Grant, a veteran actor with credits including Death Of A Unicorn, Gosford Park, Too Much, The Franchise, The Outlaws, Saltburn, and Suspect. His character often retreats to his library to escape the chaos of family life.

New Characters and Love Interests

The adaptation introduces original characters not found in Austen's work. Donal Finn plays Mr. Hayward, a lawyer created by Hadlow who serves as a potential suitor for Mary, representing a conventional path for her. Finn is recognized for his role as Mat Cauthon in Prime Video's The Wheel of Time and recently appeared as James Moriarty in Young Sherlock.

Another love interest, the handsome and impulsive Mr. Ryder, is portrayed by Laurie Davidson, known for period roles such as the Earl of Somerset in Mary and George and David Blakely in A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. His other credits include The Sandman, The Girlfriend, Masters of the Air, and Guilty Party.

Supporting Roles and Family Dynamics

Indira Varma takes on the role of Mrs. Gardiner, Mary's supportive aunt who aids her in stepping out of her sisters' shadows during their time in London. Varma is famed for characters like Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones, Tala in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Khadija Khan in BBC's The Capture.

Her husband, Mr. Gardiner, is played by Richard Coyle, known for roles in Then You Run, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Born to Kill, and The Collection. He portrays the sensible younger brother of Mrs. Bennet.

Additional Cast Members

The ensemble is rounded out by several other key actors:

  • Lizzy Bennet - Poppy Gilbert
  • Mr. Collins - Ryan Sampson
  • Jane Bennet - Maddie Close
  • Kitty Bennet - Molly Wright
  • Lydia Bennet - Grace Hogg-Robinson

With its blend of familiar faces and new interpretations, The Other Bennet Sister promises to captivate audiences with its unique exploration of Mary Bennet's journey toward self-love and independence, all set against the rich backdrop of Regency-era England.
