Directors Officially Exclude 2008 Mummy Film From Canon For Upcoming Sequel
In a definitive statement, the directors of the forthcoming The Mummy 4 have confirmed that the 2008 instalment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, will not be considered part of the official canon for the new film. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett made the clarification during a recent interview, putting to rest long-standing fan speculation about the continuity of the adventure franchise.
Original Stars Return After Decades-Long Hiatus
The original cinematic pairing of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is set to reunite for the first time since 2001's The Mummy Returns. This marks a significant return for Weisz, who last portrayed librarian Evelyn Carnahan twenty-five years ago. In the 2008 film, her role was recast with Maria Bello, while Luke Ford took over as the grown son Alex O'Connell from Freddie Boath's younger version.
Bettinelli-Olpin pointedly noted in the interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Well, Rachel is in this one," with Gillett adding, "That should answer the question for you." The directors emphasised that the new film will capture "all of the heart and the character that you could hope for," suggesting a return to the core elements that made the original films successful.
Long-Awaited Project Finally Moves Forward
Rumours of a fourth film have circulated for nearly two decades, with initial plans involving Bello reprising her role before Universal Pictures cancelled the project in 2012. The confirmation earlier this year that Fraser and Weisz would return has generated considerable excitement among fans. Fraser himself expressed his long-held desire for this project, telling the Associated Press, "The one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I've been waiting 20 years for this call."
However, the actor later tempered expectations, clarifying that while he is hopeful, the final decision rests with the studio. "Would I like to? Absolutely. I have always said I like the idea and I always will. Well, it's not up to me to pull that trigger!" he told Radio Times.
Production Details and Release Timeline
The untitled film is scheduled for release on 19 May 2028, with the script being penned by David Coggeshall, known for his work on Orphan: First Kill and the Family Plan film series. The directors expressed confidence in the material, with Bettinelli-Olpin stating, "I don't think Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it's a good script. It's gonna be fun to make."
The Mummy franchise, loosely based on classic films from the 1930s to 1950s, achieved significant box office success in the 1990s and 2000s. This revival follows the 2017 Tom Cruise-led reboot, which failed commercially and led to the abandonment of planned spin-offs. The return to the original cast and continuity represents a strategic shift for Universal Pictures.
