TFI Friday Returns to Channel 4 After Decade-Long Hiatus with Unplugged Series
Chris Evans is set to bring his iconic 1990s entertainment show, TFI Friday, back to Channel 4 for the first time in over a decade. The programme, which originally ran from 1996 to 2000, will return as a six-part series titled TFI Friday Unplugged, marking its first appearance on the station since a brief revival in 2015.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Format
The new series takes the form of a filmed podcast fronted by Evans, now 60, and will debut at 11pm on Friday, April 17th. It will be available to stream on Channel 4 and the Channel 4 YouTube channel, aiming to appeal to both nostalgic fans and a new generation of viewers. This revival follows a recent reboot as a YouTube show earlier this year, which accompanied Evans's Virgin Radio programme.

Star-Studded Lineup and Cultural Impact
The first episode features a diverse array of guests, including British singers Sam Ryder and Jack Savoretti, Indian singer Shreya Ghoshal, comedian Sindhu Lee, actresses Gemma Arterton and Cush Jumbo, and former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi. This lineup underscores the show's enduring appeal and ability to attract high-profile talent.
TFI Friday originally launched in 1996 and quickly became a defining show of 1990s British television, known for its mix of live performances, celebrity chat, and often controversial moments. Notable incidents included Shaun Ryder's repeated use of profanity, which led to a lifetime ban from Channel 4, and Ofcom complaints over segments like a staring competition for children that resulted in emotional distress.
The show also featured memorable segments such as Freak or Unique, where participants showcased unusual talents, and Someone's Going to Be a Millionaire!, which predated the ITV game show. On Christmas Eve 1999, TFI Friday made history by issuing the first £1 million prize on British television.
Evans's Career and the Show's Legacy
Chris Evans wrote and presented TFI Friday while also hosting the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show, from which he resigned in 1997 after a dispute over working hours. He later presented The One Show on Fridays from 2010 to 2015 and briefly hosted Top Gear in 2015. Currently, he fronts the weekday breakfast show on Virgin Radio and is married to golfer Natasha Shishmanian.
After Evans left TFI Friday following the fifth series, big names like the Spice Girls, Sir Elton John, and Davina McCall stepped in to present the sixth and final run leading up to the new millennium. The show became synonymous with live music, irreverent interviews, and unpredictable moments, a legacy that the new Unplugged version aims to preserve while adapting to a more intimate, contemporary format.
