Hollywood stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried found themselves in a live television scramble to protect the secrets of their new film, playfully reprimanding a presenter for nearly revealing major plot points.
A Live TV Spoiler Alert
The incident occurred on Wednesday 3 December 2025, during an appearance on NBC's Today show in New York. The actors were promoting their upcoming psychological thriller, The Housemaid, following its red carpet premiere in the city the night before.
While chatting with host Willie Geist about their on-set friendship and a relaxation space they dubbed the "girls' room," the conversation took a revealing turn. Geist, 50, remarked that the pair would "decompress covered in makeup, blood, and stuff like that." Seyfried, who was celebrating her 40th birthday, initially agreed, saying, "Oh God, there was a lot of blood," before suddenly catching herself.
"Wait! Spoilers!" Seyfried exclaimed, prompting her co-star Sweeney to immediately join in, teasing Geist with a cry of, "Yeah! We can’t spoil!"
Backtracking on the Blood
A visibly surprised Geist then attempted a swift U-turn, joking that the blood was "not on you guys, though." Seyfried sarcastically played along, stating, "There was no blood," while Sweeney added with a laugh, "No, Nina’s perfect," referring to Seyfried's character in the film.
The movie, based on Freida McFadden's bestselling 2022 novel, stars Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a live-in maid for the wealthy family of Nina Winchester, played by Seyfried. The story follows the unravelling of the family's perfect facade as dark secrets emerge.
Geist described the film, which has been heavily marketed on its shocking twist, as "aggressively insane," telling the actors, "You can’t imagine how aggressively insane things will get from there."
Star-Studded Thriller Set for December Release
The Housemaid is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on 19 December 2025. It is directed by Paul Feig, known for A Simple Favor, and both Seyfried and Sweeney served as executive producers. The cast also includes Brandon Sklenar, known from It Ends With Us, as Nina's husband.
Reflecting on the project during the interview, Sweeney expressed her passion for the layered story, calling it "delicious" and "juicy." Seyfried echoed the sentiment, stating it was "the most fun role I’ve ever been given the opportunity to play" and praised the chance to "go so wild" – carefully adding, "without giving any spoilers."
