Strictly star defends Josh Widdicombe after backlash

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has defended series co-host Josh Widdicombe, saying he is "brilliant at his job" after his presenting style sparked mixed reactions among fans and critics at the start of the 2026 series.

The BBC One dance series returned to screens last month with a new presenting team, with the comedian joined at the helm by broadcaster Emma Willis and professional Johannes Radebe. It marked the first time three people had hosted the show since it began in 2004, with the new presenters replacing Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman after they stepped down at the end of the 2025 series.

Mixed reactions to new presenting team

The change initially polarised viewers, with Emma and Josh sticking by the judges' table, as Tess used to, while Johannes joined the couples on the balcony ahead of the score reveal, the role previously occupied by Claudia.

Speaking on the red carpet for the Pride of Britain award ceremony on Monday (October 19) evening, Shirley, 66, told the Press Association: "I have a changing room just down from Josh. He is humorous. He is a gentleman. He is kind and I think he's brilliant at his job."

Shirley praises 'fresh' feel of the show

She went on to say of the changes to the show: "It's mixed up but it feels great. It feels fresh. Still one of those bigger shows where people tune into for all the family. So it's great."

Speaking about the current series, head judge Shirley, who appears on the judging panel with Motsi Mabuse, Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke, added: "I've had the best time with the new presenters, and the cast is such an even playing field. Everybody's getting into the groove now."
