Strictly Come Dancing Ratings Plummet in 2026 Series

Strictly Come Dancing has suffered its most significant ratings blow yet just four weeks into the 2026 series, with viewing figures falling sharply as the revamped format faces intense public scrutiny.

The show, which returned to screens with a new presenting line-up following the departure of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman last year, has seen audience numbers plummet dramatically. Viewing figures on October 10 slumped to 5.0 million viewers (44% share), sliding from 5.1 million during Movie Week the previous week and 6.31 million for the equivalent episode last year.

Ratings Decline Across Key Episodes

Statistics for Sunday's results programme on October 11 also tumbled sharply to approximately 4.5 million viewers, representing a substantial drop from the 6.5 million watching during the same week in 2025. Despite remaining one of the BBC's most-watched programmes, Strictly has experienced a notable decline in viewing figures when stacked up against other hit shows such as Celebrity Traitors, based on BARB's most recent data.

The latest broadcasting statistics from the past week reveal that The Celebrity Traitors' opening episode dominated with 15 million viewers, with the second instalment close behind at a whopping 14 million viewers. Meanwhile, The Great British Bake Off pulled in over 7 million viewers, while ITV drama The Blame attracted 6.3 million viewers. Strictly, however, found itself languishing in fifth spot with merely 6.2 million people watching week three, before sliding further with only 5.1 million tuning in for Icons Week on Saturday.

Reasons Behind the Drop

Industry experts and viewers have pointed to various reasons behind the continued drop, including divided opinions on the revamped presenting team and annoyance over Sunday results being spoiled online ahead of transmission. The new line-up, featuring Josh Widdicombe alongside seasoned presenter Emma Willis and pro dancer Johannes Radebe, has sparked heated discussion and significantly split opinion among fans.

Losing Tess and Claudia was always going to be a massive blow. However, the exit of fan-favourite pro dancers, including Karen Hauer, Gorka Marquez and Nadiya Bychkova, left Strictly's most devoted followers thoroughly gutted.

BBC Response and Future Outlook

BBC bosses have pointed out that standard overnight ratings don't account for catch-up viewing via BBC iPlayer and other on-demand platforms, where a growing number of fans now tune in. That said, one has to question whether the show needs yet another radical overhaul to keep its audience satisfied. Only time will tell.
