Strictly bosses to hold crisis talks over revamp

Strictly Come Dancing bosses are reportedly preparing to hold crisis talks on how to revamp the show, following a series of falling ratings and viewer complaints.

This year's series, which is only halfway through, has already generated more critical headlines than any previous season. Changes to the presenting team, new professionals, and format adjustments have prompted complaints and a decline in audience numbers.

Ratings slump and viewer backlash

The launch show, featuring new hosts Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe, attracted an average of just 4.8 million viewers, down from 6.2 million last year. As the weeks have progressed, the numbers have continued to fall, with the show now dipping below ratings for The Great British Bake Off and ITV dramas.

According to a source speaking to the Mail on Sunday, executives are 'bereft' over how the cherished 'Premier League product' is now operating at a 'League One standard'.

Insiders call for overhaul

Despite the setbacks, there appears to be optimism for the future. 'Nobody wants to give up on Strictly. It's a brilliant show, and everyone inside the BBC believes that,' said the insider. 'It needs the jazz and glamour put back into it, and they are determined to do that.'

The source added: 'There have been conversations, but there is to be a proper meeting where ideas will be put forward on how to resurrect it for the viewers. Realistically, it's too late for this series, but there is no way that it can't be overhauled for next year.'

Hosting trio under scrutiny

Speculation has also circulated about plans to replace the trio of hosts after just one series, following backlash. While Emma Willis has been warmly received, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe have faced criticism, with Josh accused of being 'out of his depth'.

A source speculated to the Daily Mail: 'When Emma, Josh and Johannes entered that room, they were seen to be the dream. Those at the BBC who didn't see them were shocked and didn't believe it could work. That view stands; it doesn't work. Not only have many of the traditional viewers stopped watching, the show has become the butt of jokes, a laughingstock.'

Others who reportedly missed out on the role include Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark, Clara Amfo, Sara Cox, Fleur East, and Sian Welby. However, Metro understands that Strictly staff are not aware of any imminent changes to the show's line-up. A BBC spokesperson said: 'This is pure and utter speculation.'

Judging panel future in question

Attention is also on the judging panel, with their contracts coming up for renewal. Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke, and Motsi Mabuse have remained constant amid the changes. One source claimed bosses felt assured that the judging line-up 'would keep some continuity this year', but now they are concerned 'anything could happen', with worries that head judge Shirley is the most likely to walk after a decade.

The source added: 'The terms of their contracts will have to be renegotiated, and if the judges don't like what the BBC is offering, maybe they won't return.' Should one panel member decide to leave, it is thought that Johannes could be an ideal replacement if he steps away from his presenting duties.

Serious talks are expected in December once this year's winner is crowned. Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturdays and Sundays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
