Amazon has pulled the plug on a new Stargate television series after weeks of pre-production, dashing hopes of a revival for the beloved sci-fi franchise. The series, developed by Stargate veteran Martin Gero, was announced in November 2025 but has now been cancelled.
According to Variety, Amazon executives were concerned that the new series would not have broad appeal beyond the existing fanbase. Radio Times has contacted Amazon for comment. Joseph Mallozzi, who was serving as a consulting producer, confirmed the news on X, saying he is 'heartbroken'.
Mallozzi praised Gero's two-year effort to craft a series that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. He described the show as embracing action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humour, and found family. 'Based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025. As of today, officially, that original vision is no more,' he wrote.
Brad Wright, also set to be a consulting producer, expressed regret that the world would not see the team's work. However, Variety reports that Amazon is still exploring new ways to further the Stargate franchise, and Gero remains under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios.
The Stargate franchise began with a 1994 film and spawned multiple series, including Stargate SG-1, which was recently ranked ninth in a Radio Times readers' poll of the best sci-fi series of all time.
