Slow Horses Production Team to Revive Classic Detective Series Lovejoy After 30 Years
Slow Horses Team to Revive Lovejoy Detective Drama After 30 Years

The acclaimed production team behind Apple TV's critically praised thriller series Slow Horses is embarking on an ambitious new project to revive a cherished detective drama that has been off the air for over three decades. See-Saw Films, the production house responsible for the Gary Oldman-led espionage hit, has emerged victorious from a competitive bidding war to produce a fresh adaptation of Lovejoy.

A Contemporary Reimagining of a Classic

Lovejoy, originally based on the popular novels written under the pen name Jonathan Gash by Dr Jonathan Grant, became a television phenomenon for the BBC during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series, which concluded its initial six-season run in 1994, starred Ian McShane as the titular character, a charmingly roguish antiques dealer from East Anglia renowned for his uncanny ability to detect forgeries and navigate the shadowy world of antiquities.

See-Saw Films has articulated a clear vision for this new iteration, telling industry publication Deadline that they intend to create a "contemporary reimagining of the Lovejoy novels that will strip away the nostalgia of the 1980s adaptation and return to the unrulier spirit of the books." This approach suggests a grittier, more complex portrayal aligned with modern television sensibilities.

Preserving the Literary Essence

The author's agent, Lisa Moylett, expressed strong confidence in See-Saw's approach. "Jonathan Gash created an extraordinarily vivid and complex Lovejoy," Moylett stated. "A morally ambiguous, often unpleasant anti-hero brought to life through taut prose and page-turning stories steeped in the shadowy world of antiques. It was essential that any new adaptation kept the books front and centre. See-Saw's bold, assured vision, led by Lisa Gilchrist and Helen Gregory, demonstrated exactly how to preserve the books' wit and grit while reimagining them for today's audience."

Dr Jonathan Grant penned an impressive twenty-four Lovejoy books, with many releases occurring long after the original television adaptation concluded, providing a deep literary well for the new production team to draw from.

Production Pedigree and Current Status

See-Saw Films brings a formidable track record to this project. Their production of Slow Horses for Apple TV+ has been a significant commercial and critical success, earning Gary Oldman Emmy, Golden Globe, and TV Bafta nominations for his portrayal of Jackson Lamb. Co-star Jack Lowden has also garnered award nominations for his role as River Cartwright, and the series itself won the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series accolade at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

The company's portfolio extends beyond spy thrillers, including Netflix's beloved teen drama Heartstopper, Apple TV's adaptation of The Essex Serpent, and the Oscar-winning film The King's Speech from 2011.

As of now, the revived Lovejoy project is not yet attached to a specific broadcaster or streaming platform. Furthermore, no casting decisions have been announced, leaving the pivotal question of who will step into Ian McShane's shoes to portray the new incarnation of the iconic antiques dealer unanswered. The development marks a significant endeavour to reintroduce a classic character to a new generation of viewers through a fresh, contemporary lens.
