Glasgow-born actor Daniel Quinn-Toye is winning over viewers in the new Amazon drama Sterling Point, where he plays Rory, a wealthy New Yorker and childhood friend of the main character Annie Jacobson, played by Ella Rubin.
The 24-year-old grew up in Glasgow and attended the Dance School of Scotland before moving to London to pursue acting. He later studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and appeared in a West End production.
A Rising Career
Daniel notably starred in Romeo & Juliet in the West End alongside Tom Holland, serving as his understudy. Away from the stage, he has appeared in the coming-of-age film Sunny Dancer and has upcoming roles in Pressure and the live-action remake of Voltron, in which he plays the lead role of Keith.
In Sterling Point, Daniel plays Rory, a former childhood friend of Annie who comes from a wealthy real estate family and spends the summer on the Canadian island she unexpectedly inherits from her estranged grandfather. A former piano prodigy preparing for the next stage of his studies, Rory is delighted to be reunited with Annie and is not shy about showing interest in her.
Fans Surprised by Scottish Roots
Despite his Scottish roots, viewers were surprised to discover Daniel is from Glasgow, having worked with a dialect coach to perfect a sharp Manhattan accent for the role. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "Rory [from] Sterling Point is Scottish???? I could never have guessed that by his accent." Another added: "A Scottish actor in Sterling Point. No way."
Daniel has revealed that despite his rapid rise in Hollywood, his family are making sure he stays humble. Speaking to USA Today Entertainment about the best advice his parents have given him, he said: "Just to keep your feet on the ground, stay grounded. Stay normal and don't take anything for granted." In a typically Scottish family response, he added: "Being here right now is not lost on me, it's ridiculous and insane. And yeah, my family group chat reminds me of how ridiculous that is everyday."
Viewer Praise and Renewal
Sterling Point follows the story of 17-year-old Annie, whose life is turned upside down after inheriting her mysterious grandfather's island in Canada. Alongside discovering secrets, Annie finds new friendships, romances and old connections as she spends the summer on the island.
The series has quickly gained attention, with many praising the mix of romance, drama and family storylines. One IMDb viewer said: "This show is really good when it comes to the amount of romance, drama, and turning points. Sterling Point also shined a lot of light on realistic problems/predicaments with family issues. It was also really good to see new actors in the industry!" Another stated: "This show is amazing. Once you get through the first episode, you'll be hooked. It makes you laugh, cry, and think about life and living with regret. The acting is fantastic and it's refreshing seeing a show where no one is hooked to their phones."
A third viewer praised the performances and setting, writing: "What a great series. The acting from everybody was superb. The setting is outstanding. It made me wish I could be 18 again full of strong emotions, close friendships, new loves and losses." The show was renewed for a second season on August 21, while season one is available to stream on Prime Video now.
