Sally Bretton Wasn't Ready to Exit Death in Paradise

Sally Bretton's Candid Confession About Death in Paradise Departure

Actress Sally Bretton, best known for her portrayal of Martha Lloyd in the BBC's popular detective dramas Death in Paradise and its spin-off Beyond Paradise, has spoken openly about her initial hesitation to exit the sun-soaked series back in 2017. In a revealing interview, Bretton admitted she was not prepared to say goodbye to her character at that time.

A Reluctant Farewell to the Caribbean

During a previous appearance on This Morning, Bretton was asked directly if she felt ready to stop filming in the Caribbean location. Her response was emphatic: "No!" She elaborated on her brief but memorable stint, explaining, "I was only out there for four or five weeks. I didn't get any of the hurricanes; I got it at just the perfect time. I had an amazing time." This candid admission highlights her affection for the role and the production environment.

Bretton first debuted as Martha Lloyd in 2017, quickly endearing herself to audiences as the fiancée-turned-wife of detective Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall. Her character's rekindled romance with Humphrey ultimately led to his departure from Saint Marie to London, marking a significant plot development in the series.

Exciting Return in Beyond Paradise

The actress expressed considerable enthusiasm about reprising her role in the BBC One spin-off Beyond Paradise, which follows Martha and Humphrey's new life in Shipton Abbott, Devon. She recalled the moment she learned about the potential return, stating, "I was part of Kris' exit storyline from the Caribbean, and then we were in the first lockdown, and the phone rang." Bretton described her reaction as one of sheer excitement, adding, "I was like, 'Oh my God!'. Even if it doesn't happen, it was just three weeks of thinking about that while the world had stopped. It was to have something to sink my teeth into."

In Beyond Paradise, Martha and Humphrey embark on a fostering journey after facing emotional challenges with IVF, showcasing a fresh start for the couple. The series features a supporting cast including Barbara Flynn as Anne, Martha's mother, and Zahra Ahmadi as DS Esther Williams, Humphrey's colleague. Dylan Llewellyn and Felicity Montagu also appear as fellow officers, rounding out the ensemble.

Emotional Twists in the New Series

In an exclusive interview with Reach PLC, Bretton and Marshall teased fans about what to expect from the fourth series of Beyond Paradise. While the couple is now happily married, their storyline is set to take an emotional turn. Bretton shared insights into their evolving dynamics, saying, "Was this a bit of an unexpected twist anyway? Going to live on the boat as it wasn't really the plan originally." She hinted at their desire to focus more on each other and settle down, noting, "And maybe now that they're married and they want to focus a lot on settling a little bit more, and maybe it's time to start having a look at a house, and I think they want to focus on each other and have all of the fun and everything that they always have done, but they've been knocked off center a lot."

Marshall added context to Humphrey's perspective, explaining, "Humphrey's very much like, 'I go off and solve some puzzles, solve some murders, solve some crimes, perfect, and then come back live on my boat'. He would never change. He wouldn't change a thing, you know, he wouldn't even think about it. He doesn't think of life progression or anything like that." This contrast between Martha's desire for stability and Humphrey's contentment with their current lifestyle sets the stage for compelling narrative developments.

The new series, currently airing, picks up after Martha and Humphrey's wedding in the Christmas special, exploring their continued adventures and challenges. Both Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise are available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, offering fans ample opportunity to catch up on the dramas.
