Prue Leith Reveals Paul Hollywood's True Thoughts on Bake Off Replacement
Prue Leith Reveals Paul Hollywood's Bake Off Replacement Verdict

Dame Prue Leith has offered a revealing insight into what her former Great British Bake Off co-star Paul Hollywood truly thinks about the major shake-up to the judging panel. The celebrated restaurateur and chef, who announced her decision to step back from the Channel 4 show earlier this year, appeared on Times Radio this weekend where she discussed Hollywood's verdict on her replacement, the renowned TV chef Nigella Lawson.

Paul Hollywood's Priorities for a New Judge

During her interview with host Jane Mulkerrins, Prue Leith shed light on Paul Hollywood's fundamental criteria for a Bake Off judge. She emphasized that the star baker, with whom she judged the beloved baking competition for nearly a decade, values genuine baking expertise far more than celebrity status.

"What Paul respects is if you know your stuff," Leith explained. "If they had hired somebody who was there just because they were famous... He would rather have a good baker nobody had ever heard of who understands what's wrong with the cake, or why it's as it is."

Why Nigella Lawson Is the Perfect Choice

According to Prue Leith, this makes Nigella Lawson, 66, an ideal successor. She described Lawson as a "terrific baker" with decades of experience who possesses both culinary knowledge and television presence.

"Of course, Nigella is a terrific baker and has been for many years," Leith shared. "She's also really good at her job. Anyone who has seen her on TV knows how confident and witty she is, and she's really clever."

The former judge addressed common perceptions about Lawson, noting: "People often think that she's just... well they don't say it, but if you say 'Nigella Lawson', people mostly think how beautiful she is, but she's got a brain on her. She's terrific."

Chemistry Between the New Judging Duo

Radio host Jane Mulkerrins revealed she had already seen preview footage of the new judging partnership and confirmed the pair have excellent on-screen chemistry.

"I had a sneak peek of what they're going to be like together," Mulkerrins told Leith. "I was at a Channel 4 preview, and I have to say, they have great chemistry. So I'm looking forward to it very much."

Prue Leith responded with enthusiasm: "They will be terrific, they will be wonderful. I think they'll get along absolutely fine."

Prue Leith's Reasons for Leaving Bake Off

The 86-year-old previously explained her decision to depart the show, citing her age and desire to focus on other passions including gardening. In a recent appearance on The Shift podcast, she confessed to concerns about physical challenges on set, particularly after being asked to film in an uneven field.

"We weren't judging cake – they wanted us to dance round this field," Leith recalled. "And it was a very hummocky, uneven field, which of course Noel could really leap over brilliantly and Paul perfectly good. But I suddenly realized 'I'm going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief'. So I said 'I don't want to do it', and they understood – they were fine."

What's Next for Bake Off

Paul Hollywood, 60, is currently fronting The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer alongside pastry chef and Bake Off: The Professionals judge Cherish Finden. Meanwhile, Nigella Lawson will make her debut on the 17th series of The Great British Bake Off, which is scheduled to air later this year.

The transition marks the end of an era for the popular baking competition, but according to Prue Leith's insights, the new judging partnership promises to maintain the show's commitment to genuine baking expertise while bringing fresh chemistry to the iconic tent.
