Director Paul Feig Backs Sydney Sweeney for Next James Bond Role
Paul Feig Suggests Sydney Sweeney Should Play James Bond

The speculation surrounding the next actor to portray James Bond has intensified, with director Paul Feig introducing a surprising candidate: American actress Sydney Sweeney. In a recent interview, Feig advocated for Sweeney to take on the role of the British secret agent, rather than appearing as a Bond girl.

Unconventional Casting Suggestion

Since Daniel Craig's departure from the franchise in 2021's No Time To Die, numerous names have circulated as potential successors. Frontrunners like Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Cillian Murphy have dominated discussions. However, Feig, known for directing Bridesmaids and working with Sweeney on the thriller The Housemaid, offered a bold alternative.

"There have been some cool Bond girls, but come on, let her be the super-spy, she's great," Feig, 63, told The Sun. "She's one of the hardest-working people I know, so professional, so smart, so savvy. I think she'd be a good spy." He emphasized that he would prefer Sweeney as Bond over a supporting female role.

Sweeney's Own Interest in the Role

Feig's comments align with Sweeney's previous remarks. In October, when asked about Bond rumours, the 28-year-old Euphoria star expressed enthusiasm for the franchise. "I've always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I'm excited and curious to see what they do with it," she said. Sweeney playfully hinted at her preference, adding, "I think I'd have more fun as James Bond."

This suggestion challenges traditionalists who believe 007 should remain a male character, potentially igniting debates about gender representation in long-standing film series.

Background and Controversy

Sweeney rose to fame through HBO's gritty teen drama Euphoria and has since expanded her repertoire with box office hits like Anyone But You and The Housemaid, as well as the critically acclaimed sports biopic Christy. Despite her success, she has faced controversy, recently addressing critics who label her "Maga Barbie" due to speculated political leanings.

Her rumoured connection to the Bond franchise reportedly stems from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who attended his wedding to Lauren Sánchez last June with Sweeney. Bezos is said to be keen on her appearing in a Bond film, possibly as a Bond girl. If cast in such a role, she would join a legacy of stars including Honor Blackman, Kim Basinger, and Rosamund Pike.

Franchise Developments

Amazon MGM Studios assumed creative control of the James Bond films in 2025, replacing long-time producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli in a lucrative deal. While no official casting announcements have been made, Dune director Denis Villeneuve is set to helm the next installment, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight confirmed as the scriptwriter.

As the Bond rumour mill continues to churn, Feig's endorsement of Sweeney adds a fresh, provocative dimension to the ongoing conversation about the future of the iconic spy series.
