Alan Rothwell, an original cast member of ITV's Coronation Street, has passed away at the age of 89. The actor was best known for portraying David Barlow, the younger brother of Ken Barlow, from the soap's debut in 1960 until his departure in 1969.
Rothwell died peacefully in hospital on Thursday after a short illness. His family released a statement saying he would be 'fondly remembered and deeply missed'. The actor's career spanned more than seven decades, encompassing roles in Brookside and as a presenter on children's programmes Picture Box and Hickory House.

William Roache, who played Ken Barlow and is the only remaining original cast member, paid tribute to his former on-screen brother. A spokesperson for Coronation Street also acknowledged Rothwell's contribution, describing his character David Barlow as iconic.
Rothwell's portrayal of David Barlow saw the character involved in several memorable storylines, including a romance with Lucille Hewitt and a career as a professional footballer. After leaving the soap, Rothwell continued to work extensively in television, cementing his status as a beloved figure in British entertainment.
