In a revealing insight into the beloved BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, actress Tessa Peake-Jones, who portrayed Racquel, has highlighted the show's enduring appeal as rooted in its "heart". She emphasised that modern sitcoms should strive for similar warmth, while also disclosing a little-known controversy surrounding a specific episode.
The Banned Christmas Special
Peake-Jones revealed that the show's creator, John Sullivan, held such a strong dislike for the 1985 Christmas special titled "A Royal Flush" that he allegedly prevented its broadcast for nearly 20 years. This decision stemmed from concerns over the episode's tone, which was described by editor Chris Wadsworth and producer Richard Latto as "quite a cruel, dark episode".
Del Boy's Uncharacteristic Behaviour
The core issue centred on Del Boy, played by David Jason, acting in an uncharacteristically nasty manner towards his brother Rodney. Sullivan reportedly felt that this portrayal made Del Boy "too nasty", a sentiment echoed by director Ray Butt and Jason himself. In fact, Sullivan expressed a desire to edit the episode two decades later to remove Del Boy's cruel behaviour, though it remains unclear if any changes were ultimately made.
Cast Nerves and Dedication
Beyond the episode ban, Peake-Jones also shed light on the cast's intense nerves before filming in front of a live audience. This underscores their deep dedication to perfecting the comedy, ensuring that the humour resonated authentically with viewers. Such commitment contributed to the show's lasting legacy and its status as a classic in British television history.
The revelations offer a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind Only Fools and Horses, illustrating how even its creators grappled with maintaining the balance between humour and heart that made the series so iconic.
