Netflix's new dramedy 'Don't Say Good Luck' has earned a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers describing it as a 'sweet and heartfelt' tearjerker. The film stars Sunny Sandler, daughter of Adam Sandler, alongside Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Stephanie Beatriz, Steve Buscemi and Job Lovits.

Plot and cast details

The film centres on Sophia Birenbaum, played by Sunny Sandler, who is leading her high school's musical production while dealing with 'even more drama at home than on the stage', according to the film's Netflix bio. Melanie Lynskey takes a break from her role as sinister plane crash survivor Shauna in Yellowjackets to round out the cast.

Critical and audience reception

One reviewer wrote: 'Don't Say Good Luck is an easy movie to like. The story is sweet and heartfelt and has that coming-of-age feeling that I always enjoy.' Another said: 'I cannot believe how emotionally cathartic this movie was. My wife even said "I can't remember the last time I cried during a movie". Maybe we don't watch too many sad movies, but the way it brought up my own losses, life itself, the future, our own eventual and inevitable last breath. I can still tear up thinking about it!'

A third person wrote: 'Sunny Sandler gives a genuinely charming performance as Sophie, but the real emotional heart of the movie is her relationship with her mother, played beautifully by Melanie Lynskey. Their chemistry makes the quieter scenes hit especially hard, while the musical elements give the film plenty of uplifting moments. I loved how it captures the excitement, nerves, awkwardness, and passion of being a theatre kid.'

Another viewer added: 'I'm not a critic and don't write reviews. I'm just a 14-year-old girl. But I will say this is genuinely the best movie I've ever watched in my life. I was straight-up bawling my eyes out during this movie, and I never cry during movies.' One more said: 'Absolutely wonderful! I was not expecting to watch an Oscar-worthy movie, but it is. Actors, story, production, every aspect of this film is top-notch! I hope someone has the good sense to nominate it for Best Musical, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Direction, and whatever else is available!'

Don't Say Good Luck is now streaming on Netflix.
