Joanna Scanlan has hinted that the ending of Channel 5's new thriller Missed Call is far darker than viewers might expect. The five-part series, which begins tonight, follows Scanlan's character Sarah, a single mother whose teenage daughter vanishes during a school trip to France.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Scanlan revealed that the plot kept her guessing until the very end. 'I definitely didn't guess the end when I was reading it,' she said. 'I would defy anybody other than Sherlock Holmes to do so. It is a really good plot, really chunkily enjoyable.'
The actress warned that the story takes a grim turn as Sarah arrives in the French village of Saint Michel to investigate. 'It's much darker than you might anticipate from the start,' Scanlan explained. 'When Sarah arrives and starts kicking the hornets' nest, all sorts of really nasty things emerge.'
Rupert Graves, who plays Jason, also discussed his character's secrets. 'Inevitably, she looks at people and they have secrets,' he said. 'Some of them are unsavoury. Jason definitely has mysteries and secrets.'
The official synopsis describes the series as a gripping race against time, set against the backdrop of a picturesque French village. Sarah's world is upended after a late-night missed call from her daughter Katie, and she finds the host family and local authorities disturbingly indifferent to the disappearance.
Missed Call airs nightly on Channel 5 from tonight.
