Matt Richardson: Comedians Will Clamour for Celeb Traitors After Romesh Win
Matt Richardson: Comedians Will Clamour for Celeb Traitors

Comedian Matt Richardson has said people in his industry will be desperate to appear on the next series of Celebrity Traitors following Romesh Ranganathan's victory. Romesh's win made him the second comic in a row to take the cash, after Alan Carr's win, and Matt believes others will want to follow suit.

Comedians Keen to Take Part

Asked on TikTok whether he thought stand-ups would be keen to head to Ardross Castle, Matt said: "Comedians will want to do it, yeah. Obviously, comedians have been quite good at it..."

He added: "This show is massive. Look what it did for Alan Carr, who was already very successful. It really pushed him up to that next level again of like being one of the sort of darlings of the British entertainment scene."

A Career Boost for Romesh

Matt said of Romesh: "And Romesh doesn't need the boost, but it will just reinforce his national treasure status and his status for years to come, and I think these shows really work. And why Romesh has done really well is you can see him as a person, and he's a great guy."

He added that contestants take part in The Traitors for the "career it gives you" rather than the money. "Everyone will want to be involved," he continued. "This is now the hot ticket, and they are booking people who don't normally do reality shows. You are surprised at the guests because it feels like the prestigious high-end one, and also you don't have to learn to dance like you do on Strictly. This is going to be the one that everyone is clamouring to get on."

Two Comedians in a Row

Matt said comedians "will definitely see the appeal that now two comedians have won". He added: "But also, someone like Joanne McNally, who is massive and has a huge audience, has really pushed her into the mainstream. So those sorts of people will be getting pushed. It's the look. I would rip their arm off to do it. I would pay them to do it, but I am not big enough."

Romesh and Bash's Victory

Romesh and co-star Bash were the last two remaining at the firepit at the end of the BBC show. In a dramatic turn of events, Bash said at the roundtable: "I began this game as a faithful, but I'm ending this game as a faithful."

Romesh, who had paused for dramatic effect, told his co-star: "Bash, I began this game as a faithful, and I'm ending this game as a faithful." Both stars were thrilled to be faithfuls and secure the prize fund for their charities.

After winning, Romesh said in a statement: "It's happiness tinged with a little bit of embarrassment. I feel that I've won the game, despite, I would say, my key development area in this game being identifying Traitors correctly. I think that's probably the thing that I was worst at."

He went on: "I don't hold on to my beliefs very strongly. I'm easily swayed, and I would say that I'm a mug. I've been a mug in this game, and as I discovered that I'd won, there was both joy at winning and a sense of embarrassment at what I'd done during the game. I'm really happy to have won, but you've got to think about my level of contribution to the game, compared to some other people that have fallen by the wayside. James Blunt at some point in the future will kill me, and I'm saying that now. It's almost certain. I don't think his family are going to like me when they watch the show. I set up a hate campaign against Michael Sheen on camera. I genuinely said tonight we kill the King, which doesn't sound Faithful."
