Matt Lucas Revealed as Emperor Penguin in The Masked Singer UK Format Shake-Up
Matt Lucas unmasked as Emperor Penguin on The Masked Singer

The seventh series of ITV's hit show The Masked Singer kicked off with a major format twist and a stunning celebrity reveal, as the Emperor Penguin was unmasked as comedian and actor Matt Lucas.

A New Format with Bands

The show, which returned to ITV1 and ITVX on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th January 2026, introduced a brand-new element: house bands. For the first time in the programme's history, a band performed each night with a mystery celebrity as the lead singer. Emperor Penguin fronted the Antarctic Funkeys on Sunday night, delivering a rendition of The Who's Pinball Wizard.

The judges—Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, and Mo Gilligan—were left divided on the star's identity before the audience's chant led to the unmasking. Lucas, famed for Little Britain with David Walliams, emerged from the costume, quipping about the heat inside and revealing his costume choice was inspired by his love for the chocolate biscuit of the same name.

Clues, Guesses, and Fan Reactions

Following the reveal, Lucas treated the studio audience to a reprise of his performance. The surprise was palpable among viewers, with one fan on X writing: "Matt Lucas...did not see that one! Well done sir...what a voice!" Another added: "I’m actually gobsmacked that Matt Lucas was Penguin! Haha. Well done!"

This followed Saturday night's unmasking, where Goldfish was revealed as pop star Anne-Marie. She had led the 'No Trout' band and later performed her hit song 2002 for the audience. Her clues included a mathematical equation (54x4x10-166+8) that solved to 2002, heavily hinting at her identity for eagle-eyed fans.

Keeping Viewers on Their Toes

The introduction of bands marks a significant evolution for the series. A source told The Sun prior to the launch: "The franchise’s first-ever bands are going to blow everyone’s minds... Viewers are going to be more bamboozled than ever." The new format promises four unmaskings across the first two episodes, with Goldfish and Emperor Penguin being extra celebrities alongside the main 12-person lineup.

The show's previous winner was West End star Samantha Barks as Pufferfish. The Masked Singer continues to be a weekend staple for ITV, blending mystery, music, and spectacular costumes to keep the nation guessing.
