ITV presenter Mark Pougatch has accused the BBC of misrepresenting the circumstances of his departure from the corporation in 2020. Now 58, Pougatch is one of ITV's most senior sports presenters and is fronting their World Cup coverage this summer from a studio in Brooklyn, New York.
Pougatch Rejects BBC's Account of His Exit
In 2020, the BBC announced that several journalists and presenters, including Pougatch, were leaving. The BBC's statement said: "Mark is a brilliant broadcaster who has been an integral part of 5 Live Sport for years. Recently he has been presenting fewer programmes because his other commitments have grown and he has now decided to move on. We wish him well."
Pougatch, however, offered a different version of events. He told The Times: "The BBC have decided they want to go in a different direction and that's their prerogative. They decided it, not me. I don't know why they put that statement out saying I have decided to move on. But I am not going to fall out with Radio 5 Live. I have many happy memories and have had a phenomenal time."
BBC's Response and Social Media Reaction
A BBC spokesman responded: "We have nothing to add." Pougatch also tweeted: "Thank you very much for all the kind messages... Just so we're clear this was not my decision but on we go." Former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling voiced his displeasure on X, writing: "Sad that his total professionalism will be replaced by someone who is considered to be more in touch with the youth of today, even if they know sod all about football or interviewing. He can't say it so I will."
World Cup Coverage from New York vs. Salford
Pougatch is currently leading ITV's World Cup coverage from a New York studio alongside Laura Woods, while the BBC is broadcasting most of its studio output from Salford. Speaking to Radio Times, Pougatch said: "Our studio is in Brooklyn with Lower Manhattan over my shoulder. It will look spectacular, and I genuinely believe by being there we can absorb the rhythms of the place, right at the heart of it."
