The Married At First Sight Australia finale aired on Channel 4 on Thursday, May 14, and was paused for an emotional tribute to the late relationship expert Mel Schilling. Schilling, who tragically passed away in March at the age of 54 following a battle with cancer, had already filmed her final season on the Australian version of the dating show before her death.
Bittersweet Farewell
As the credits rolled on the finale, a series of clips showcasing Schilling's time on the show began playing, accompanied by a voiceover of her offering advice to contestants. In one clip, she reflected on the deeper purpose of the experiment: "Yes, this experiment is about finding love, but there's also another very important stream that runs through this experiment. It is about personal development. It is about finding your worth. It is about learning to find your voice and to start really believing that you deserve love."
Another heartwarming moment featured fellow expert John Aiken asking Schilling about her husband, Gareth Brisbane. She responded: "He says I'm his soulmate. He says he can stop looking because he's found me." In the final seconds of the tribute, Schilling shared words of encouragement with the contestants: "Thank you so much for your time in this experiment. For your courage, your authenticity, we salute you and wish you all the best and all the happiness in the world."

The tribute moved viewers at home, with many taking to social media to express their emotions. One wrote on X: "Beautiful tribute at the end for Mel RIP beautiful lady #MAFSAU." Another added: "Absolutely sobbing at the tribute for Mel. It's not going to be the same not seeing her on our screens anymore. Sweet dreams beautiful lady #mafsau #mafsaustralia." A third shared: "Watching tonight's #MAFS #MAFSau knowing it's the last time we'll have the beautiful Mel Schilling on our screens was heart wrenching. The tribute at the end had me sobbing. Some people just radiate human sunshine, she was one of them. Life can be so incredibly unfair." A final viewer remarked: "Well that's a wrap one successful couple! And such a moving tribute at the end to Mel! RIP."
