Love Island 13th Series Sets New Ofcom Complaints Record After Viewer Outcry
Love Island Series Sets New Ofcom Complaints Record

Love Island's 13th series has shattered Ofcom complaints records after recent episodes featuring 'unacceptable' behaviour by contestants, with nearly 3,000 complaints lodged in just four days. The broadcasting watchdog confirmed that 2,919 complaints were filed for episodes aired between July 6 and July 9, more than five times the previous week's total of 533, which had been the highest since the series launched.

Movie Night and Casa Amor Spark Outrage

The complaints surged after the dramatic Casa Amor and Movie Night episodes. On July 6, 100 complaints were submitted, with Ofcom stating the bulk 'related to Jasmine's behaviour towards other participants.' That episode featured Movie Night, including footage of Jasmine's 'affair' with Lorenzo.

July 7 generated 352 complaints concerning 'concerns about Lola, Kavan and Charleen's behaviour towards other participants.' In that episode, Kavan ended his romance with the Dublin influencer, who retaliated over his conduct. After a recoupling ceremony, she found herself single and was forced to exit the villa alongside fellow bombshell Mara.

Lola's Behaviour Dominates Complaints

Ofcom confirmed that the bulk of complaints on July 8 and July 9 centred on 'Lola's behaviour towards Julia.' These episodes saw tensions escalate as the recoupling process unfolded, with Julia and Lola continuing to clash following the Casa Amor drama.

July 9's episode attracted the highest number of complaints ever filed with Ofcom, totalling 2,331. Viewers watched Julia attempt to bring all the girls together at the firepit to resolve their differences, but Lola declined the invitation and refused to participate in the group discussion. One viewer branded Lola's conduct as 'ranting' at Julia, claiming she 'needed a trigger warning.' The viewer added: 'Honestly, her shouting at Julia and completely refusing to let her get a word in was absolutely unacceptable.'

Fallout in the Villa

In the aftermath, Lola and Sean found themselves among the couples receiving the lowest number of votes when fans were invited to select their favourites. Julia and Lorenzo emerged victorious and were given the responsibility of deciding who should depart. Lola and Sean persuaded Lorenzo that they should be the ones to exit.

ITV has been approached for comment. Love Island airs Sundays to Fridays at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
