Netflix has officially confirmed the renewal of Little House on the Prairie for a second season, with the announcement made back in March 2026, months before the first season even debuted. Season 1 arrived on July 9, 2026, with eight episodes available for binge-watching worldwide.
Faithful Adaptation of Classic Novels
The series is an adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved children's novels, which recount her family's frontier experiences as they sought to build a new life. Unlike the original 1970s television adaptation, Netflix's version aims to be a more faithful retelling of the books. Season 1 focuses on the Ingalls family arriving in Independence, Kansas, and constructing a home on a plot of land, only to face significant obstacles.
Fans have taken to social media to praise the series. One user on X wrote: "I'm really enjoying the #LittleHouseonthePrairie reboot. It's a much more faithful adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, and it finally captures the spirit of the original story. #LHOTP." Another commented: "#LittleHouseOnThePrairie is AMAZING! Ive almost binged it all. 2 more episodes to go! Love it! @netflix." A third viewer praised the casting, noting: "Wow, just saw #BarretDoss as a store worker/owner? And saw that @jockosims is in this show too, cool! This show is looking GREAT now! #LittleHouseOnThePrairie."
Season 2 Greenlit Early
Netflix gave the green light for Season 2 in March 2026, even before the first episode had aired. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine stated, according to The Hollywood Reporter: "I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story."
What to Expect in Season 2
Spoiler Warning: This section contains spoilers from Season 1. Season 2 is expected to follow the Ingalls family as they attempt to rebuild their lives after discovering they cannot remain on the land they settled. The new season will continue their journey across the frontier in search of a permanent home. Sonnenshine told Deadline of the overall arc: "The Ingalls are on a long journey of figuring out who they are, they’re coming of age, every one of them."
If the series follows the books, the next destination may be Plum Creek, near Walnut Grove, Minnesota—the setting of the 1970s series. The main cast is expected to return, including Luke Bracey as Charles 'Pa' Ingalls, Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline 'Ma' Ingalls, Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls, and Warren Christie as John Edwards. It remains unclear whether other Season 1 cast members, such as Jocko Sims as Dr. George Tann, Meegwun Fairbrother as William Mitchell, Alyssa Wapanatâhk as White Sun, and Wren Zhawenim Gotts as Good Eagle, will return after the Ingalls' departure from Kansas.
New Cast Additions
Several new actors will join the cast in Season 2. Willa Dunn will portray Nellie Oleson, Laura's fierce school rival. Rachelle Lefevre will play Eva Beadle, the beloved schoolteacher, and Charlotte Sullivan will take on the role of Margaret Oleson, Nellie's mother.
Release Date Unknown
As of now, no release date has been announced for Season 2. However, given the early renewal, fans hope the new season will arrive sooner rather than later. The first season of Little House on the Prairie is currently streaming on Netflix.
