John Lithgow Opens Up About Ageing and Rowling Controversy in Harry Potter Reboot
Veteran actor John Lithgow has shared candid insights about the realities of ageing while filming the upcoming Harry Potter television reboot, alongside addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling's anti-transgender views. Lithgow, who portrays Albus Dumbledore in HBO's highly anticipated series, revealed these thoughts in the new making-of documentary Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, now streaming on HBO Max.
The Challenge of Ageing Alongside Young Co-Stars
At 80 years old, Lithgow acknowledged that contemplating his age throughout the production was an extremely difficult thing to process. He explained that by the time the multi-season project concludes, he will be approaching 88, while his young co-stars grow into their roles. "They're gonna grow up in this. And I'm gonna grow older with them," Lithgow stated, highlighting the unique dynamic of filming a long-term series later in life.
Lithgow praised his new colleagues—Arabella Stanton as Hermione, Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, and Alastair Stout as Ron—calling them "an amazing ensemble" who share genuine camaraderie. The reboot will adapt each of Rowling's seven books into individual seasons, with the first eight-episode season covering Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and scheduled for release later this year.
Record-Breaking Trailer and Production Details
The series has already generated significant buzz, with HBO's first trailer becoming the most-watched in the network's history. It garnered over 277 million organic views across platforms within just 48 hours of its debut, showcasing Harry's journey from his mundane life under the stairs to discovering the wizarding world.
Lithgow expressed enthusiasm for the role of Dumbledore, describing it as a "wonderful role" and noting the appeal of working in England with a crew experienced from productions like The Crown. He emphasized the professional and personal benefits, including job security into his later years, which he found impossible to ignore.
Addressing the Rowling Controversy
Despite his excitement, Lithgow did not shy away from the continued backlash against the series due to Rowling's views on gender. He previously labeled her anti-trans stance as "ironic and inexplicable," and in a recent interview with The New Yorker, he elaborated on his decision to join the project despite the controversy.
Lithgow revealed that by the time "the whole subject of Rowling's imputed prejudice" arose, he had already committed to the show. Although urged to walk away, he stood firm, stating that the reasons to participate were far stronger than those to protest. "I do disagree with much of it, much of it I think has been twisted and misrepresented, and she has doubled down on it at her own cost," he explained.
When questioned about the "ferocity" and "cruelty" of Rowling's responses to criticism, Lithgow admitted feeling "surprised" and "disappointed." He maintained that the stories themselves remain "very stirring" and resonate deeply with audiences, which motivated his involvement.
Looking Ahead to the Reboot's Release
As anticipation builds for the series premiere, Lithgow's reflections offer a nuanced perspective on balancing artistic passion with social responsibility. His comments underscore the complex interplay between legacy, ageing, and contemporary cultural debates in the entertainment industry.
