Legally Blonde Prequel Trailer Sparks Backlash Over Missing Star

The first trailer for the forthcoming Legally Blonde prequel series Elle has finally arrived, sparking immediate controversy among fans of the beloved 2001 comedy. The nine-part coming-of-age drama draws inspiration from the original film, which starred Reese Witherspoon, who now serves as executive producer. Rising star Lexi Minetree steps into the iconic role of Elle Woods, following the character as she adjusts to life at a new high school after moving from Bel-Air to Seattle in 1995.

Released on May 6, the trailer prompted viewers to denounce the spin-off as a "cheap cash grab." The backlash intensified following news that the series, set to launch on July 1, 2026, has already secured a second season before its debut. The 50-year-old actress first announced the project on May 14, 2024, promising that audiences "will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do."

Cast and Controversy

The preview depicts Elle's relocation from Bel-Air to Seattle as a teenager in 1995, with June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott portraying Elle's parents Eva and Wyatt, while James Van Der Beek appears in what would become the late actor's final on-screen performance, reports the Mirror US. Devotees of the original film have been scathing about the upcoming series. One X user declared: "Trailer looks cheap af. Pink outfits can't save bad casting and weak jokes. Why ruin Legally Blonde by making young Elle a basic teen? The original movie was lightning in a bottle; this is just cash grab garbage."

Another viewer agreed, writing: "Cheap-looking lighting, seems like a low-budget commercial." One pointed out the series' contemporary appearance despite its 1995 setting, remarking: "This doesn't look dated properly. She looks great, but the costuming, outfits, and makeup make this seem set in the present year and not the 90s, especially when compared to the outfits of Legally Blonde."

Missing Star Debate

Some felt that there was a major star missing, claiming producers had squandered the chance to cast Reese's lookalike daughter, Ava Phillippe, 26, with viewers questioning: "But why didn't they use Reese Witherspoon's daughter...a literal carbon copy of her?" "Was Reese's daughter not considered for the role?" asked another, as one questioned: "Couldn't they cast Reese's daughter?"

Other fans took issue with the decision to reboot Legally Blonde at all, with many voicing frustration at the sheer volume of sequels, remakes and reboots dominating streaming platforms. "A 'Legally Blonde' prequel was inevitable because Hollywood will reboot anything except original ideas literally," one disgruntled viewer remarked. Another chimed in: "Why can't we have original new ideas instead of ruining the reputation of old movies by making trash?"

Many were left baffled by the programme's storyline, given that Legally Blonde is already a fish-out-of-water tale. One puzzled viewer questioned: "Is she going to have major character development in Seattle, then lose it all to move back to California before the start of the first movie?"

Positive Reactions

Not everyone was upset though, with many fans sent into an excited frenzy after the first look. "I’m about to make this show my entire personality," said one, while another pointed out: "I remember seeing Reese Witherspoon talking about finding the perfect Elle! Knowing she had a hand in production and/or some creative control, I have a feeling this will be good!" Elle is set to make its debut on Amazon Prime Video on July 1, 2026.
