In a poignant and deeply personal moment from the latest episode of his ITV series, Kelvin Fletcher has revealed the heartbreaking farm decision he was forced to make regarding one of his beloved animals. The former soap star, who now runs Fletcher's Family Farm, shared that it is "nearly time" for his first calf, a steer named Sonic, to be prepared for slaughter.
An Emotional Journey on the Farm
During the episode, which airs on Sunday at 11.30am on ITV, Kelvin explained the difficult reality of farm life. He noted that while his family has previously consumed Fletcher's lamb and Fletcher's pork from their own livestock, they have yet to try Fletcher's beef. This is set to change with Sonic, but the decision comes with significant emotional weight.
As he patted Sonic on the head, Kelvin admitted he wasn't sure how he felt about the process, despite it being a standard part of farming. This isn't the first time the actor has faced heartbreak on the farm, but this particular case feels new and particularly challenging.
The Story of Sonic
Kelvin shared in a voiceover, "I'm in the barn with Sonic, and we're about to start a journey that every farmer knows well, but in this particular case is new to us. It's nearly time for Sonic to make the journey most livestock animals are bred for."
Sonic holds a special place on the farm as their very first calf. Because he is a castrated male, or steer, Kelvin explained that "his days are numbered." The actor elaborated on the reasoning behind castration, stating, "With a lot of the livestock, the reason why you castrate is that they're going to go into the food chain. It stops them breeding and being a potential nuisance."
Facing the Reality of Farm Life
Reflecting on the decision, Kelvin went on to say, "Even though it's part of life on the farm, it doesn't make the moment any easier. But we also know why our animals are here and how essential that cycle is to keeping the farm going."
He acknowledged that the intentions for Sonic were clear from the outset, given his status as a steer. Sonic is approaching two years old and has lived a full life, even being described as a "cracking animal" and a show winner with rosettes to his name.
A Family Understanding
Kelvin revealed that he and his family hope Sonic will be on their menu this Christmas, marking the first time they will eat Fletcher's beef. He said, "People will be eating Fletcher beef for the first time ever. We'll be eating Fletcher beef for the first time ever. We've had Fletcher pork and Fletcher lamb, and next it's going to be beef. So massive thing for us."
The actor praised his children for their understanding of the farm's cycle, noting, "The kids understand brilliantly the concepts, in such an uncomplicated way, of what the animals become. You know, when we eat animals, they've got a very good understanding of that, and it's uncomplicated, as it kind of should be. It's celebrated."
Sonic's Legacy
Despite the sadness of the moment, Kelvin emphasized that Sonic has had a great life, running around happily and looking in fantastic condition. He added, "He's a show winner as well. Let's not forget that he's a rosette-wearing supreme champion. I'd probably go as far as saying you'd be our most famous. You're our first, you're award-winning, you've been on the telly, you've got a name, and you'll be the first Fletcher beef that we eat and other people eat, so there's a lot riding on this, mate."
The process of finishing Sonic for the food chain is now underway, with Kelvin admitting he doesn't know how it will feel compared to their experiences with sheep and pigs. He concluded, "We enjoy meat, as many people do, and this is part of it. Obviously, we've done that with the sheep and the pigs, and we've kind of got used to that now, whereas this is going to feel very well, I don't know how it's going to feel. Is it going to feel different? I don't know."
