Kaley Cuoco Opens Up About Big Bang Theory Fame and New Thriller Vanished
Kaley Cuoco, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee known for her role in the iconic sitcom The Big Bang Theory, has transitioned into a series of fast-paced comic thrillers. In a candid interview, she shares insights into her latest project Vanished, the challenges she faced on the set of Charmed, and the media frenzy surrounding her $1 million-per-episode salary.
From Sitcom Stardom to Thriller Success
Cuoco, who starred as Penny in The Big Bang Theory for 12 seasons, has pivoted to roles in zippy comic thrillers like The Flight Attendant and now Vanished. In the new series, she plays an archaeologist whose boyfriend disappears during a European vacation, leading her into a complex conspiracy. "It's me just gallivanting all over Marseilles," she laughs, describing the action-packed filming. "Some days I'd go, like, how much did I run today?"
Despite her long career, which began at age six, Cuoco feels she remains somewhat under the radar. "There are actors who get thrown into fame overnight, right? And they're like The Beatles," she says. "But I've just been kind of there." This perception was highlighted when a magazine once labeled her a "newcomer," a moment she recalls with amusement.
Lessons from Charmed and Big Bang Drama
Cuoco's experience on Charmed, where she joined the show in its final season, was notably difficult. "It was intense and difficult," she admits, noting that some cast members were unwelcoming. This taught her the importance of inclusivity on set, a lesson she carries forward. "I will always make sure every single person feels like they're part of the group," she emphasizes.
In contrast, The Big Bang Theory provided a creative and emotional balm. However, it wasn't without its tensions. As the show's popularity soared, so did the cast's salaries, with Cuoco and her co-stars eventually earning $1 million per episode. Negotiations for pay parity with newer cast members became public, causing friction. "It was weird," Cuoco recalls. "Would anyone want people sharing what they make?" Yet, she acknowledges the realities of fame: "We're in the public eye, so that stuff is going to be known."
Influences and Future Directions
Cuoco credits actor John Ritter, her co-star on 8 Simple Rules, as a major influence. Ritter's sudden death in 2003 left a lasting impact on her. "To this day, I'm always like, 'what would John do in this situation?'" she says, describing him as her guiding light for leadership and kindness in the industry.
Looking ahead, Cuoco remains realistic about her career. "Though I've had success with one thing, it doesn't mean the next one will be like that," she states. She embraces both comedic and dramatic roles, aiming to resonate with audiences while staying grounded. "I could do that forever," she says of her girl-next-door image, "but I could also try to do something else."
With Vanished now streaming, Cuoco continues to evolve as an actor, proving that her journey from sitcom fame to thriller star is far from over.
