Former You've Been Framed host Lisa Riley has spoken out after ITV reportedly axed the show following 33 years on air. The 46-year-old Emmerdale actress, who presented the programme from 1997 to 2002, said the decision 'makes total sense' given the rise of streaming platforms.
ITV bosses are said to have ended the show as viewers increasingly turn to social media for funny clips instead of watching them on television. The programme, which first aired in April 1990 with original host Jeremy Beadle, saw members of the public send in amusing home videos. At its peak, it attracted up to 15 million viewers, but ratings have since fallen sharply.
Reacting to the news on social media, Riley shared a throwback photo and wrote: 'YOU’VE BEEN FRAMED. I woke up this morning to loads of messages informing me that after many many many years “YBF” is leaving ITV. It does make total sense this decision, as this format is now so readily available on streaming platforms.'
She thanked the show for 'five glorious years, full of non stop, fun-laughter' and praised the crews she worked with. Riley also noted that the programme was 'a terrific learning ground for young adults wanting to make it in TV' and that many former colleagues have gone on to work on entertainment shows worldwide.
A source told The Sun: 'The fact that You've Been Framed has been shelved is a sad sign of the times. Why would viewers tune in to a show featuring funny videos when they could see the same sort of thing on the internet?' Over its 33-year run, the show aired 701 episodes, with the last episode fronted by Harry Hill in August last year.
