The cherished BBC comedy series Goodnight Sweetheart, featuring the iconic Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst, could be poised for a television comeback after a full decade away from our screens. The popular time-travel sitcom, which originally aired on BBC One from 1993 to 1999, might return for a one-off special to finally wrap up its narrative, according to its co-creators.
Plot and History of the Beloved Sitcom
In Goodnight Sweetheart, Nicholas Lyndhurst portrays Gary Sparrow, an accidental time traveller who discovers a portal allowing him to move between 1990s London and 1940s London during World War II. Gary navigates a complex double life, balancing relationships with his wife Yvonne in the modern era and barmaid Phoebe in the wartime past. The show captivated audiences with its unique blend of humour and historical drama.
Previous Revival and Current Prospects
The programme previously made a brief return in 2016 with a one-off special titled Many Happy Returns, which was part of the BBC's Landmark Sitcom Season. This special attracted nearly five million viewers, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the series. Now, co-creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have revealed they are open to producing another one-off special to provide a definitive conclusion to the storyline, but only under the right conditions.
Laurence Marks explained to The Sun, "If we were asked by the BBC, 'Would you do a one-off?' and we rang Nic and the girls, they would probably say yes. But they'd want to know that they're playing the ages they are. We would only do it if we had our cast." Maurice Gran added, "If anyone on TV suddenly found a few million quid they want to find a home for, then we could make it."
Material Already Prepared for a Potential Special
Interestingly, the writers have already developed the material for a new special. They have penned the final episode of the programme in the form of a novel, scheduled for publication in May. Titled Goodnight Sweetheart: Many Happy Returns, the novel continues the story just before the events of the 2016 special, which was set in the spring of 1962 during Marilyn Monroe's performance at President Kennedy's birthday celebration.
This plot development has significant consequences for Gary Sparrow. When he first met his wartime sweetheart Phoebe, he falsely claimed that the girl he left behind in Los Angeles was Marilyn Monroe, adding a layer of intrigue and complication to his time-travelling escapades.
Creators' Broader Work and Inspiration
Beyond Goodnight Sweetheart, Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have an impressive portfolio, including work on The New Statesman, Birds of a Feather, and the comedy drama series Love Hurts. Maurice previously disclosed that the BBC's decision to commission the 2016 special, which celebrated 60 years of comedy, inspired them to consider reviving the characters in new ways.
He said, "In 2016, we were asked to revive it. The BBC were doing a number of tributes to classic comedy. We found a way to bring him back again, which I thought was quite fun and it was a good show, it was a well received show. Unfortunately, the BBC decided they didn't want to do a series of it, which was extremely annoying, because we had the whole cast and they were really up for it, Nick was up for it. It was great and it made us think that maybe we'll do something in another medium because we had a lot of good ideas for it."
The potential revival hinges on securing the necessary funding and commitment from the BBC, but with the cast reportedly willing and material ready, fans of the classic sitcom may yet see Gary Sparrow's time-travel adventures conclude on screen after all these years.
