Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer honour Ted, the beloved Patterdale Terrier mix owned by Gone Fishing executive producer Lisa Clark, in the second episode of season nine. Ted died at the age of 13 in April this year, and the episode, already available on BBC iPlayer, sees the pair back in Norfolk, the first location where Ted joined them.
Return to Norfolk
Early in the episode, the pair are seen driving through the countryside as Paul says: "Well, Bob, poor old Ted, eh?" Bob replies: "Yeah, he would have liked this trip, wouldn't he?" Paul agrees: "He would have loved it, it would have been right up his street, wouldn't it?"
Bob recalls that Norfolk was the first place Ted ever joined them, to which Paul responds: "Well, it's fitting that we are back here now then, isn't it? We'll maybe raise a glass to Ted, because we will miss him." The pair then joke about their old friend, with Bob asking whether Ted will go up or down, referring to heaven and hell. "It's very hard to say, I think he will go up," Paul says, before Bob quips: "But then be rejected."
Toasting Ted's memory
Later, sitting by the riverbank after discussing Bob joining the gym with his son, the pair raise a cup of tea in Ted's memory. Paul says: "He's be having a right laugh up there, won't he?" Bob replies: "The people up there with him won't though, will they?"
Paul jokes: "I know, he will give them a piece of his mind," adding: "Teddy, we are going to miss him on the riverbank, Bob, aren't we?" Bob reflects: "Good company, he was. He was great, because he certainly didn't fawn over us, did he?" The conversation turns poignant as Bob shares heartfelt words: "He were grumpy... he had a very generous heart." Paul adds: "And that's why we loved him, poor old Teddy."
Fan reaction
Ted made his TV debut in the third series, which aired in September 2020. He made regular appearances throughout the show and was awarded a 'lifetime achievement award' in the 2025 Christmas special. Fans shared their reactions on Instagram, with one saying: "#GoneFishing what a show, what an episode. Still sobbing. RIP Ted." Another wrote: "That was a hard watch saying goodbye to Ted. He'll always be remembered as part of the #GoneFishing team. Thanks for the memories Ted."
Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing airs on Sundays on BBC2 at 9pm.
