Alex Ligertwood, the former lead vocalist of Santana, has passed away at the age of 79, his wife has confirmed. The Scottish singer died peacefully in his sleep just two weeks after his last performance.
Wife's Tribute
Shawn Brogan, Ligertwood's wife of 25 years, announced the news on Facebook. She wrote: "It's with great sadness and heartache to announce the passing of my sweet dear Alex Ligertwood, my husband of 25 years, we knew each other for 36 years. Alex passed peacefully in his sleep with his doggy Bobo by his side yesterday."
She continued: "Alex was loved by so many. If you knew him, you loved him. He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul. His favorite thing in life was to make music, sing and to share his gift with us. He performed his last show just two weeks ago. I'm grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end."
Brogan added: "I will always love you, my sweet Alex. Rest in peace. Soar and sing with the angels, my love. Please keep me & his family, Lynn & Stewart Locke, Alex, Jenny, Kali, Merci & Marilo in your prayers."
Career Highlights
Ligertwood served as Santana's lead vocalist intermittently from 1979 to 1994. During his tenure, he contributed to acclaimed albums such as Marathon (1979), Zebop! (1981), and Sacred Fire: Live In South America (1993).
After his time with Santana, Ligertwood collaborated with the German tribute act The Magic Of Santana, as well as with Senate, the Jeff Beck Group, and the Average White Band.
