Emmerdale viewers were left devastated this week as the Dingle family received tragic news about their beloved dog Monty. The pet, who originally belonged to patriarch Zak Dingle, was rescued from a shed fire set by Kyle Winchester but later diagnosed with metastatic cancer.
During Wednesday's episode (July 8), Paddy Kirk visited Wishing Well Cottage to update Cain, Moira, Belle, Sam, and Lydia on Monty's condition. He revealed that tests confirmed a tumour on Monty's spleen had spread to his lungs, describing it as an aggressive form of cancer.
Sam Dingle bluntly asked, "He's going to die then," to which Paddy nodded. Lydia questioned Monty's quality of life, and Paddy explained that while the dog faces challenges from smoke damage, he is eating well and alert, with good moments possible through treatment.
Cain, who is himself battling prostate cancer and initially refusing treatment, responded: "Being comfortable isn't the same as living, though, is it?" Moira urged the family to cherish the time left with Monty, while Sam remained pessimistic.
After picking Monty up from the vet, Cain was encouraged by Paddy to give his dog more time and treasure every moment. This encounter prompted Cain to reverse his decision and resume treatment for his own cancer, bringing joy to his loved ones.
