Emmerdale viewers think they have uncovered Liam Cavanagh's (Jonny McPherson) dark secret, after the character reacted strangely when a stranger claimed to recognise him.
Last week, Liam was horrified when Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) revealed that Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson) was lying dead on the table in the vets. Mary was alive and well, leaving Liam perplexed. He soon discovered she was playing a role in a murder mystery that Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) had created for her partner.
As Liam got to work trying to solve the case, he came across a terrifying bloke called Dave. Eventually, when Liam arrived at the pub, he learnt that the event was an elaborate way for Chas to reveal that she has booked a date for their wedding. After the event, Liam approached Dave – real name David – to thank him for taking part.
Fans React to Liam's Mysterious Past
It was revealed that David is from Kingston, and he thought that Liam was from there as well. The new face was adamant that he had met Liam before, but made it clear that he does not remember bumping into anyone with the Cavanagh surname. Liam was very reluctant to entertain the conversation, and then outright told David that the man he is thinking of is not him.
When Liam walked away, he had a look on his face that suggested David's comments about him were accurate. Following these scenes, multiple fans of the ITV soap took to social media to share their thoughts about Liam and what he could possibly be hiding. Interestingly, many people believe there could be an alternative reason for why Liam loves solving murder mysteries.
'I did also think is there a chance his wife is still alive? Maybe she's been 'missing' and his love for mysteries has been because he's still trying to solve her disappearance', this user said on Reddit. In agreement, this person put: 'Ooh, that would be interesting. She could've been saved from her allergic reaction at the last minute, without Leanna knowing (& never will)'.
Theories About Liam's Secret
Speculating that Liam cannot legally marry Chas, this fan added: 'Maybe he's a bigamist? Leanna's mum might not have died; maybe she had postnatal depression and disappeared. Dave didn't remember his name, just his face – he could have done a mark wylde'. Another wrote on the thread: 'He really is a serial killer and loves to relive his glory days through the power of murder mystery games. He's married to Meena and everything else is water under the tiny bridge…'.
Liam has lived in the village since 2014. With David believing that they met when Liam was in Kingston, it means he has potentially kept this secret for well over a decade. Liam and Chas' wedding is now scheduled for the end of January, which really is not too far away. The couple could fall victim to a classic soap trope of having their big day destroyed because of a secret.
