Scottish actor Dougray Scott has declared his role in the new Channel 4 drama Summerwater to be the pinnacle of his career, calling it the 'best thing I've ever done'.
A Gripping Scottish Thriller
The series is a television adaptation of Sarah Moss's bestselling novel, set within the confines of a Scottish holiday park. The unique narrative structure unfolds over a single, tense 24-hour period, with each episode revealing the story from the distinct perspective of different cabin occupants.
The official synopsis sets the scene: 'In a Scottish holiday park enduring unpredictable weather, the residents of Summerwater attempt to escape life's problems in the serenity of isolation.' However, this is far from a peaceful retreat. The park is described as a mysterious, all-knowing place where holidaymakers are forced to confront their deepest desires and darkest truths.
Scott's Personal Connection to the Role
Dougray Scott, 59, takes on the role of Dr David Campbell, a man who has been visiting Summerwater with his wife Annie, played by Shirley Henderson, for many years. Now retired and with their children grown, David anticipates an energetic break, but the couple soon discovers they cannot outrun their troubles.
David grows increasingly frustrated by his wife's health issues. Haunted by fears for their future and burdened by guilt over a past infidelity, the mounting pressure pushes him to his absolute limit.
At a recent press event, Scott explained his deep connection to the project. 'Lot of things drew me to it. I thought the script was incredible,' he said. 'John [Donnelly, the screenwriter] has just written this extraordinary adaptation of a quite extraordinary novel. It's a sort of stream of consciousness. It's a sort of musing, a sonnet, a poem - it's really quite wonderful.'
He also revealed a poignant personal link to his character, David. 'David reminded me of my mother, and I mean that in a very loving way. She was a woman who was full of regret... David is a character who really is full of the past and trying to live in the present.'
A Family Affair and Critical Acclaim
The production also became a family affair, with Scott's son, Gabriel, cast to play the younger version of his character. Praising the entire team, Scott stated, 'The cast are phenomenal, you know, everybody. It may be the best thing I've ever done... I'm really proud of that. I'm just happy to have been part of something that means something to people, hopefully.'
Summerwater weaves together the lives of several families, with simmering tensions between them observed from their disparate cabins, building towards what is promised to be a devastating climax.
The highly anticipated Channel 4 drama is set to premiere on Sunday, November 16 at 9pm.
