Death In Paradise Fans Mourn Darlene's Exit as New Sergeant Arrives
Death In Paradise: Darlene Exits, New Sergeant Joins

Devoted viewers of the beloved BBC crime drama Death In Paradise have expressed widespread disappointment following the official confirmation that a cherished fan favourite is departing the series after an impressive seven-year tenure. The light-hearted detective show, renowned for its idyllic Caribbean setting and revolving cast, is preparing to bid farewell to Officer Darlene Curtis, portrayed by the talented actress Ginny Holder, as it gears up for its landmark fifteenth series.

An Emotional Farewell to a Beloved Character

The BBC shared the poignant news on social media, posting an emotional montage video that highlighted Darlene Curtis's most memorable moments throughout her time in Saint Marie. The accompanying caption conveyed the production team's sincere gratitude, stating: 'Sadly, we’re saying goodbye to Darlene this series. Ginny Holder has been a much-loved cast member, and we’re hugely grateful to her for bringing her talent, personality, and energy to Officer Darlene Curtis.' The message concluded on a hopeful note, adding: 'We wish her all the best – maybe we’ll catch up with her in Saint Marie down the line!'

Darlene first graced screens in the show's seventh series, later making a full-time return in series eleven. Initially joining the Honoré Police in a civilian role, her character's journey saw her evolve into a fully-fledged police officer under the guidance of Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington.

Fan Reaction: Outpouring of Disappointment and Best Wishes

The announcement prompted an immediate and heartfelt reaction from the show's dedicated fanbase across various social media platforms. One devoted viewer lamented: 'Oh no! How sad! I adore the spice and class Darlene brings to the show. Wishing Ginny all the very best.' Another echoed this sentiment, questioning: 'Darlene will be missed – who else will put DI Mervin in his place?!'

Further comments praised the character's unique impact, with a third fan noting: 'Aww, Darlene will be missed and have enjoyed her character very much. Wishing Ginny Holder all the best for the future and hope it won’t be too long before we see her on screen again.' A fourth admirer simply described Darlene as a 'perfect' character and a genuine 'breath of fresh air' for the long-running series.

A New Face for the Honoré Police Force

While Darlene's departure leaves a vacancy within the fictional police team, the gap will not remain unfilled for long. The BBC has simultaneously unveiled the first look at the show's newest recruit, Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, portrayed by up-and-coming actress Catherine Garton, aged 27. This casting was exclusively revealed last week.

In newly released promotional images, the island's latest addition appears ready to tackle Saint Marie's curiously high murder rate, pictured in full uniform on the programme's iconic golden sands. She will report to the recently appointed Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, played by Don Gilet, who is still acclimatising to island life himself.

Introducing Sergeant Mattie Fletcher

Speaking enthusiastically about her new role ahead of the series launch, Catherine Garton shared her awe for the filming location, Guadeloupe, which stands in for the fictional Saint Marie. 'I didn't quite know what to anticipate, then it exceeded any expectations I could have had. I love the island. Guadeloupe is like a postcard. It's quite unreal,' she gushed. 'Every time I walked out I was like “this exists, wow!” It’s absolutely stunning. Everyone's nice. I love the culture. The food's great.'

Garton also offered insight into her character's personality, branding Mattie as 'tenacious' and 'sassy'. She elaborated: 'She's really fun to play. She's sassy, but she's like your big sister who will tell you what's what, but you can also come to her if you need to.'

What to Expect in Series Fifteen

The forthcoming series promises a fresh set of intriguing mysteries for DI Mervin Wilson and the team to unravel. Alongside the new dynamic introduced by Sergeant Fletcher, personal storylines will take centre stage. DI Wilson will attempt to connect with his recently discovered half-brother, Solomon, portrayed by Daniel Ward, though initial familial happiness may soon turn to frustration.

Meanwhile, returning Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington, will confront the consequences of his recent absence. After receiving some tough love from old friend Catherine Bordey, played by Elizabeth Bourgine, he is determined to regain the trust of the island community. Familiar faces Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas and Officer Sebastian Rose, played by Shantol Jackson and Shaquille Ali-Yebuah respectively, will also return.

Death in Paradise continues to air on BBC One and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
