Dame Judi Dench Pitches Herself for Emmerdale Role

Dame Judi Dench has revealed she would like to star in Emmerdale, saying she could be ‘a very serious shepherdess’ driving sheep. The 91-year-old actress made the comments during an appearance on Sara Cox’s Radio 2 breakfast show.

A Career Without a Soap Invite

Dench, who has graced screens and stages for more than seven decades, said no one has ever asked her to join a classic TV soap. ‘I don’t think I ever have!’ she said, adding: ‘I’ve never been asked to appear in TV soap opera.’

When asked which soap she would join, Dench was certain: ‘Emmerdale. Driving some sheep! I could be a very serious shepherdess.’

Support for The Archers

Dench has never appeared in a British TV soap but has starred in The Archers, the BBC Radio 4 drama, as Pru Forrest. She is among more than 100 current and previous cast members who have signed a letter to BBC Director General Matt Brittin, calling on him to commit to keeping the recording of the soap in Birmingham.

The letter states that if The Archers left the Midlands, it would be the equivalent of ‘Corrie leaving the north-west’ or ‘EastEnders leaving the south-east’. The signatories believe abandoning the West Midlands ‘risks ripping out the heart of Ambridge’.
