Coronation Street's Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) has booked an appointment for an abortion after discovering she is pregnant with Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) baby. The decision comes as she considers the impact the pregnancy will have on her relationship with Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) and her family life now that her mum Sarah (Tina O'Brien) has been released from prison.
Bethany's pregnancy discovery
Earlier this month, Bethany learned she was pregnant during a trip to the doctors, where she also found out that Kit, her mum's ex-boyfriend, is the father. The revelation follows a one-night stand between Bethany and Kit, which actress Lucy Fallon described as a mistake.
“I don't actually know what she was thinking,” Lucy Fallon said of the twist. “I think they both were in quite a bad place at the time, they were obviously in the flat together, they were trying to deal with a lot of stuff together and I think it was just one of those things that happened. It just happened. It was a one night mistake, I don't think she has any feelings for him at all in that way.”
Relationship with Ryan Connor
Bethany's stress is compounded by her developing relationship with Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott). Fallon noted that the pair genuinely like each other and share history from a previous relationship, but the pregnancy could complicate things.
“They've got a bit of shared history as well from when they were together before but obviously this is going to throw a massive spanner in the works,” she said. “If she chooses to go through with the termination that will make things easier for their relationship, but if she chooses to keep the baby, that's going to complicate the whole situation because is Ryan going to want to be with her if she's going to be having someone else's baby when they're so early on in their relationship?”
Decision to book appointment
With her mum home and the added pressure of a pregnancy, Bethany decided to book an abortion appointment to avoid a web of lies. However, booking the appointment and actually going through with it are two different things, and it remains to be seen whether her view will change when she arrives at the clinic.
