Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon has revealed that a behind-the-scenes blunder during a dramatic scene forced the script to be amended. The actress, who plays Maria Connor, discussed the mishap on Thursday's episode of Loose Women (October 22), explaining how a real glass shattered when she slammed it onto a table, leading to an unexpected change in the storyline.
Pie Scene Goes Wrong
Fans of the ITV soap witnessed explosive scenes during Thursday's episode (October 22) when Maria confronted Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) at the Bistro. The dramatic moment followed Sarah's not guilty verdict from the jury regarding Theo Silverton's (James Cartwright) death, allowing her to walk free from court. Her former partner, Gary Windass (Michael North), was not as fortunate, receiving an eight-month sentence for perverting the course of justice - a verdict that left Maria furious.
While Sarah was celebrating her freedom at the Bistro with relatives, Maria arrived and angrily shoved a pie into her face. What ITV audiences weren't aware of, though, was that the actress had been meant to slam down a glass onto the table beforehand - a moment that went drastically wrong.
Behind-the-Scenes Blooper
Taking to Instagram, Coronation Street posted a behind-the-scenes blooper showing Maria banging a glass down after sarcastically toasting Sarah's freedom. When it unexpectedly shatters, Samia can be heard swearing before exclaiming: "Was that a real glass? I'm so sorry." A fellow cast member jokingly remarked on her strength, while she checked whether those seated at the table were unharmed, as fragments of broken glass had landed near them, reports the Daily Star.
During Thursday's episode of Loose Women, Samia discussed the dramatic scene going awry as she explained: "We had to amend the script after that. It was a real glass, usually we have sugar glass, so I thought it could've been a sugar glass, but yeah, I don't know my own strength."
Fans React to the Blunder
Discussing throwing the pie in her co-star's face, the ITV star admitted: "I loved it, I'm not going to lie. It's normally Maria, the one getting the pie in the face, so for once it was really enjoyable to just stick it to Tina (O'Brien). We had such a fun day at work, it was brilliant. It was quite nerve-wracking because I only really got one shot at it."
Viewers quickly took to social media to comment on the amusing mishap, with many expressing similar sentiments. One viewer remarked, "Love it, more bloopers to the people, please." Another wrote: "Oops. Would love to see more bloopers." While someone else commented: "Need bloopers for Saturday nights to watch! And maybe Sunday when Corrie isn't on on a Sunday! Corrie bloopers!!!" One viewer said: "This is brilliant." Meanwhile another person wrote: "Keep the bloopers coming."
Coronation Street airs weeknights on ITV1 at 8.30pm and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX.
